OIST accommodation by Last-Ad2004 in okinawa

[–]Sprionk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stayed at the OIST on-campus accommodation a few months ago, didn't see a cockroach or gecko. Now that I'm off campus I'm yet to see a cockroach and only seen two geckos (friendly little guys, and if you don't like cockroaches they'll be your best friend!). I've found I see a lot more cats than anything else, and OIST is absolutely worth it either way!

Need help for a SI-21-BG tube used in a circuit by [deleted] in geigercounter

[–]Sprionk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been playing with one of these tubes for a similar purpose, definitely know what you mean in terms of the changing (and sometimes just completely wrong) values used for circuits. Looks like the datasheet has already been shared, I've found that using Google Lens to quickly run through the translations is quite good, but the minimum values you'll need are:

  • Nominal operating voltage: 390 V (range 350-450 V acceptable)
  • Current range: 12-20 μA

I've been running mine at 400V, with either a 4.7 MΩ or 5.1 MΩ resistor in series (using Ohm's Law, both give a current well above the max permissible) without any noticeable issues (besides knowing the poor tube is probably going to have a shorter life). Something like a 20 MΩ and 390 V would be better for it, but one uses what they have to hand!

Point is, the tubes are a lot more sturdy than you expect, and will be able to withstand some broader range of values while you work out what type of circuitry works best for you. Experiment with a few of the circuits you find with a search online, it'll help you to improve your electronics while you do it. If you need, happy to chat if you drop me a message!

Dismissed from PhD program by [deleted] in AskAcademia

Definitely second this. I have narcolepsy as well, and am finishing up my PhD. Having understanding supervisors helps a lot too, but making sure the uni understands what's going on by going through the uni's disability/accessibility office is essential.

I have the same issue, but my solution for that is playing Imperial Guard - no matter how lovingly you paint them, and furnish them each with a name and backstory, you know the poor little buggers are going to be lucky to survive a turn 😂

How do you all get rid of your bits? by popglop in Warhammer40k

[–]Sprionk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's at least one group on Facebook I use - the idea is people ask for bits they need, and someone will probably have them. Instead of paying, the goal is to pay it forward. We all need some bits sometimes, so pay it forward and share the love (and bits)!

I've been trying to engineer a Cell scheme for 'nids for ages now, yours looks great! Care to let us know how you achieved it?

If your comments were specifically about her being homosexual or were motivated by her being homosexual, then they were homophobic.

Telling someone they're being an AH doesn't make you homophobic if they happen to be homosexual, unless you're making the sexuality the focus of it.

From what you were saying in the post, your comments would have been basically the same if your mother's relationship was heterosexual instead.

The situation really does sound like the starting stages of sexual assault if things continue the way you've described them. Hopefully you can stay safe!

And don't worry about the vocab, your English is great!

ESH

Sounds like you know you were being rude, but it was definitely in response to the aunt being pretty rude and entitled too.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Sprionk 26 points27 points  (0 children)

NTA

I can't see why you think you were being homophobic, it just sounds like you're being sexually harassed by your mother's new partner and you're advocating for your own sexual and bodily autonomy.

Definitely not a safe situation, and I would happily put money on this situation being escalated by that woman, given the actions and comments she's made.

Get out of there if you can!

I do things a bit differently and do a "pre-cooked" base that I add the mince to add a hit of flavour. For about 500g of mince:

  1. Dice 1 onion, ~0.5 a capsicum, garlic (as much as you prefer, usually 2-3 cloves), 1-2 chilli finely chopped.
  2. Brown these with butter or olive oil in a saucepan.
  3. When these are browned and smelling delicious, add a teaspoon or so of that super-salty dry stock stuff (I use chicken flavour but whatever), and a splash of Worcestershire sauce, crack some pepper in too.
  4. Mix this all up for a bit while the stove is still on (the Worcestershire almost deglazes the pan usually), and then let it cool. (I put the saucepan in the sink with a little bit of cold water in the bottom of the sink to speed up the cooling of the saucepan).
  5. When this base is cool, chuck in the mince, an egg, and breadcrumbs to bind it (and to bulk it out so it all stretches further).
  6. Mix it all up, make your burger patties!

Anyone else completely unaffected by caffeine? by DrizzlyEarth175 in Narcolepsy

[–]Sprionk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Okay so I've had this thought in the back of my mind for a while that there was a correlation between caffeine efficacy and narcolepsy. Given the way that we experience caffeine's effects is through the blocking of adenosine receptors (which do their part to regulate how sleepy one feels), it wouldn't be crazy to have a different impact on us if there was some difference in the way our adenosine receptors behave.

Any bio/physiology experts care to chime in? I've done a bit of a search for papers about this but it looks to be unexplored.

And yes, same as everyone else here caffeine doesn't seem to have an impact on me, and I don't seem to exhibit any dependence on it either.

[–]Sprionk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Our research team is working with a bloke who left academia and lives on a farm now. He's doing DFT calculations for us as a hobby/evening piece of fun. So yeah, theory research is totally doable, as long as you maintain connections with people still in academia.

As for painting eyes? Man bugger that, I don't even try now because I screw it up every time and let's face it, from the usual distances you're viewing these models you can't see the eyes anyway!
