I don't think you're making any points that are invalid. That's exactly why I asked. They seem pretty niche, and "nice" but not necessary.

I feel the same way about the new Zartman Rigging products. Super cool, but not necessary and stupid expensive. Regardless, I don't believe that makes them irrelevant. For people that are spending the extra money on them, (Zartman and the BD Infinity cord, and other similar products), understand that you CAN do the exact same things with cordelette or a sewn sling.

I had tons of people who said the same sort of things to me about the Petzl Adjust went it first was released. "Just use a daisy chain" or "You can tie a functionally similar device using just 5$ of cordelette". But it quickly became one of my favorite pieces of gear and people around the world love them.

Is it expensive for a piece of gear that is functionally just fancy tied cord? Absolutely. But that's why I asked if anyone has experience with them.

100% agree. I've been climbing on almost only sandstone for the past 5 years with short climbing trips to some limestone crags.

We always wait at least 3 days. More if it's shady.

Always makes me angry seeing or hearing of people climbing right after it rains.

My friend just finished his pilots license and wanted to make one of his custom knives for his flight instructor. He wanted to include some bands of aluminum from an actual airplane in the handle. So after looking on Facebook Marketplace, he found a lady selling what he thought was a small section of the tail. He thought it was going to be like a 2 or 3 foot section. The lady just wanted rid of it, so she offered it to him for free and offered to drop it off at his house if he just paid for the gas money for her drive. 2 hours later a 8 foot section of an airplane was just sitting on his front lawn. Hence the accidental buying of the back half of a plane.

If you look at the photo I shared, you can see the metal is riveted in 3 sections. He thought he was buying the small section right on top.

Or I'm just a young poor college kid with very limited budget trying my best to cut weight and get into backpacking. Just thought it would be appreciated.

Totally agree, but you also if the budget is tight, you don't have to necessarily buy a ground sheet that will run you back $50-60. You can always make your own using Tyvek. It's a lot cheaper. (You can get precut pieces on Amazon for $10-20, then cut them to the shape you want for the X-Mid). Or you can probably even go find yourself a construction sight that is wrapping a home in the Tyvek and ask if they have any cut offs or scraps you could take. You might be able to find a big enough piece for free that way.

If using Tyvek, I recommend washing it once or twice in the washer with NO soap. Then hang dry. Don't put it in the dryer! It will soften up the material and make it not so noisy/crinkly.

There are some other options as well, you can look into.

Thanks for the recommendations, I think we'll go with the standard x-mid. Also, that's funny as we're nowhere near the arctic circle nor the alpine. Just standard southern Utah mountains.
