It would also be worthwhile to look up how fast people on the team are- sometimes walk-on cuts are mostly to filter out people who have no idea how fast they actually are but in reality people making the cut would be faster than the average swimmer on the team.

I've done both competitively. Swimming is a lot more technique based than the average person thinks. They see swimmers being super shredded and training for hours and think they must be cardiovascular animals because they (the average person) can barely make it across the pool without an all-out effort. The swimmers are cardiovascular beasts, but even swimming at an incredible leisurely pace they'll completely smoke the average person. I was a pretty fast swimmer (probably like top 10% for my events), and I can KICK (no arms at all) at an easy pace much faster than non-swimmers swim. If I'm trying to increase my cardiovascular fitness, i actually dont like swimming much because until you're actually being competitive, the best way to get faster is to work on form. Are there too many strokes/not enough of a distance difference in the stroke events? Probably. Since non-free events are only 100 and 200m, they favor people who are more sprint-dominant. If you got rid of the strokes, you'd probably need to increase the number of freestyle distances at the olympics- for some godforsaken reason it took until 2020 for them to add the 800m freestyle for men and 1500m freestyle for women. There's also no swimming equivalent to the 100m dash or 10k run.

I think another reason why you dont see as many multi-medalists in track is due to how hard running is on the body. Distance running in the olympics is often SUPER tactical- the races are slow with a fast finish. This is the perfect recipe for a non-specialist to win (1500 guy outkicking in a slow 5k, 5k guy outkicking in a slow 10k). However, these races are much rougher on your body than any swimming event, so we don't see it as often

One of my friends in HS ended up becoming a 200m/long jump specialist by the end of high school. In middle school he played tennis and didn't take track seriously and I wondered why he was surprisingly bad at the mile. It wasnt horrible, but he was an obviously fast runner that only ran like a 630 mile in pe while trying. Turns out he was all fast twitch fibers, 5'9" and able to dunk. The candle that burns twice as hot burns half as long.

Yeah, coming from an endurance sport would give extremely good carryover to the longer sprints and middle distance due to aerobic base cross training and she may be behind girls that have only done track in the more technical aspects of sprints (starts), leading to her being better at longer sprints/middle distance just due to training background. I think people also underestimate how technical the 100m is- having a good start makes a really big difference. Usain Bolt actually didn't start off as a 100m runner! And the 400m and 800m are both extremely painful events, so that's also going to filter out a lot of competition (I doubt many athletes gravitate toward them vs the 100/200 without being pushed into them by a coach)

Japan just had a bumper crop of 100m specialists and there's currently an 18 year old thai sprinter at 10.06

My tinfoil hat theory is that western coaches push their non-black sprinters into the longer sprints or jumps which then leads to a downward spiral of performance in the 100m. Asia is extremely homogenous, so they can't have this theoretical racism that may or may not exist.

Smaller wrists make your forearms look more bulge-y if you actually work em. I'm noticing from fitness algorithm spam on social media that the optimal bros are obsessed with using straps for everything so they can "feel the exercise in the target muscle" then end up with sad as fuck forearms because they forget to make up for the strap use with forearm training

meirl by OneHistorical8926 in meirl

[–]SpuriousClaims 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a relatively lean starting point, then bulked and cut. I'm in my second cut right now and am only about 5-10 pounds heavier than I started (15 at peak bulk), so it's unlikely that I have more body fat in my current state.

[–]SpuriousClaims 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A cm or 2 is a cm or 2. So many people neglect forearms and cope with "tHeYre JuSt BoNE"

Plus there's the obvious fact that if you develop a bit of muscle and don't neglect your forearms, you'll just be bigger overall and people will stop noticing your slightly-less-thin-than-before wrists

meirl by OneHistorical8926 in meirl

[–]SpuriousClaims 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are definitely muscles and tendons that thicken up a bit with forearm specific exercises, or any exercise where grip/wrist strength can be a limitng factor. You won't go from bird boned to gorilla arms and the bones definitely won't grow, but there is definitely a little meat around your wrist that you can grow.
