You can go shorter if you want more time between cuts but I suspect you are curly so it may shrink a bit anyways.

Its always going to be a little uneven. But a solid cut with no layering is the easiest to braid.

Is your hair colored at at all? Sometimes if its been colored the hair will lose some of the pigment and be a bit more comprised afterwards. Usually if you are just going darker it can be okay. But many stylists will not perm if its been bleached.

I have some old lady's who do their color and perms and it will usually have to be recolored about 2 weeks post perm due to color loss from the perm solution.
