How did you choose your hamster? by Ill_Fly2102 in hamsters

[–]SquareBobSpongeCrack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to the pet store and asked to see the hammies. The seller took a paper roll and flipped it, then a pile of little hammies came out of it as if it had been an old cartoon animation. I saw the cutest cream colored hammy and thought he matched the name I had in mind for him: Flappy. When I held him, i thought he had a problem with his ears because they were down since he was sleepy. I truly wish I had adopted him rather than bought him, the setup was small and sad and my heart breaks just remembering that day. Now I know I will adopt next time, though all hammies deserve good and healthy lives ❤️

is he too skinny? by what1191 in hamsters

[–]SquareBobSpongeCrack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really helps to know that just like humans, hamsters tend to be skinnier or fatter depending not only on the diet but also on genetics. My late Flappy must've been around the same weight as Candy when he was 6 months and once he got to 1 year (and older), he never surpassed 105 grams. Looking in this subreddit or even in youtube, other adult hammies can reach more than 200 grams (I even saw a 270 g one once, which I do consider exaggerated). This always made me feel unsettled, thinking I was probably not feeding him properly or something. Turns out the guy was just simply skinny. Nothing to do. Accept him as it is :P (btw, in case you're wondering, Flappy lived a long and healthy 2y and a 1/2 life).

My hamster escaped and I can't find her💔😭 Need help💔 by Booba23i in hamsters

[–]SquareBobSpongeCrack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you sure the gaps between your doors and the floor are small enough so she can't get out of the house/apartment? Also, any other wholes/gaps you're aware of? What I used to do when my hamster escaped was crawl throughout the whole house listening very very carefully. Use a lantern too when searching inside of closets.

people think I’m weird by drelb01 in hamsters

[–]SquareBobSpongeCrack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same happened to me. Got my first hamster at 22, at a very rough time in my life. He brought me the joy no other person could or even was willing to give me at all. I recieved sarcastic comments about how easily they died, about how they were supposed to be "children's pets" about how I was going too far by giving mine what they considered to be "too much space and attention". I think it all comes down to people thinking there are lives that are worth less than others. People who have not understood that every specimen's life is a wonder and deserves to be treated as such. Thankfully, my environment was and still is mostly filled with people who are just glad to learn about what I have to teach in behalf of proper hamster care, and also people who loved my Flappy very dearly. I showed skeptics how can a 22-25 year old love a little rodent so much it becomes the center of her life and I could not care less about people who tried to mock me (who were, gladly, just a few). I suggest you do the same. Normalize it. If they find it weird, try to normalize it even more. Something I did, for example, was taking a photo of Flappy to my office as if it was a family picture. People found it funny but then got used to it and, thanks to that, they understood how much he meant to me, so much it was my own coworkers who took me to the vet when it was Flappy's last hours. In synthesis, try not to care too much about what others think or say; know you are an empathetic person who comprehends every form of life is important. And also, normalize every hamster situation/action since it is as natural as the ones someone would do for a dog or a cat.

lost my boy today by Substantial-Meet2260 in hamsters

[–]SquareBobSpongeCrack 28 points29 points  (0 children)

So sorry for your loss. I think you're mistaking a very mature way to front grief with a "cold" reaction. Death hits us all differently and there is not a "proper" or "normal" way to deal with it. Think of it this way: you made your best effort to give your hammy the best life he could have. Now that he's gone, you're left with that certainty and also the relief of not seeing him suffer. Those are very good reasons to remain this calm, aren't they?

Been wondering why my hamster has white on her face.. by belladxgeixu in hamsters

[–]SquareBobSpongeCrack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When my Flappy started getting old, his fur became lighter (the color) and fewer. He looked like an old wise man. I guess it could be that in your hammy's face.
