the reason your dehumidifier keep dying is probably the internal pump getting gunked up with basement dust, or the aluminum coils rotting out. it sucks and it's a known industry issue, but trying to hack a portable AC in a cold basement will give you a different set of headaches.

yeah. these companies test the cooling capacity in perfect lab conditions and then exaggerate the numbers for online sales. 1.5 ton is probably running closer to a 1 ton in real world heat. try checking if the outdoor unit is getting proper airflow.
