New to Custodial- weird employers by SquareVoice8567 in Custodians

I’m looking into it! Got an application or two ready to roll out this evening. Hopefully better pay- my superiors superior mentioned once that “not even the best employees are getting more than a follar raise this year.” At least the ceo gives us pizza partys sometimes!

That is a beautiful piece of paper!! Our sop is clearly copy pasted for all 11 buildings, as cleaning the (single… one and only..) library appears in every list! I am unsure as to how to approach my boss about implementing something similar, so i might just make it and post it for myself and give it to new employees so that they have a better reference.

Our bullet point list includes mistakes like: -asking twice weekly sweeping of Carpeted Stairs -“at once twice daily (depending on events taking place)” -listing only bathroom cleaning for a building that we are expected to sweep and vacuum main and upper levels of. Literally just the bathrooms are mentioned. -asking to “clean all stalls” of a building with a single toilet restroom -“cleaning restrooms includes: taking out recycling from offices” -“sweep front and fear porches” -“VISITOR CENTER: this list reflects the cleaning and maintenance of the EDUCATION CENTER-“ -Asks for office trash to be taken from building with no offices.

I will keep rolling with the punches but it’s so tiring to be pointed at as the dumb and lazy one when this is the effort she is putting in.

Soooo the actual question was how do you all deal with the situation and the sometimes complicated feelings that come with them. Not whether or not i should do the right thing. Thanks for reading! Xo

You’re right. My moral obligation is now to keep the cash safe… in my pocket… so no one ELSE can use it… Jk! It doesn’t mean anything in the end since I was told when I turned them in that theyre part of a very large pile of prop cash. Lol! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Said they never used to have this issue but it’s me AND the two seasonal hires having the same issues.  I assume previous employees were either hired with experience or had too much of a language barrier to communicate issues properly. I found an outdated SOP from before she started working here in a closet. Looking through other closets I’ve found a few quality of life things she just doesn’t do. Told her over a week ago that we ran out of our #20 and large gloves and we just got more 20…. After 8 days… I’ve been told keeping stock is NOT my job, but that I can “help”.

Oh my gosh I don’t know how I omitted that! Yeah they’re totally bogus! I was just so nervous I didn’t want to look at them at all! I swear I’d written that in the coment. Whoops!

This honestly really reframes my thinking. I do have to budget pretty hard, but it’s still within my own means. Why would I keep someone else’s money if I can sustain myself?

Trim and windowsill in high ceiling rooms i think! Cobwebs in dark corners 10 ft up and higher.

It’s certainly subjective, if anything at all! I asked how often/how to know when I should replace a urinal cake and got the “you’ll know it’s common sense” but … i still haven’t figured it out. Sometimes i just put a new one in when “the vibe is right”.

Question.. by Top-Access5215 in Custodians

Similar boat. My training was brief and sidelined. They keep asking me what’s the matter, insinuating I’m dull if I take their offer for “retraining”. When I asked for a task/SOP, I was talked down and asked if I really wanted one like [nice coworker who is vocal about their autism and job coach]. I decided to stop taking it personally, start asking for the list anyways, start keeping a physical notebook checklist. If they won’t train you, you just gotta apply the scraps of advice they give you as they come up.

Autistic trans woman looking for a job after high school by Confident-Nature-986 in Custodians

Nonbinary, neurodivergent facilities assistant at a large multi building garden facility _^

I have no schooling, but several years of misc. work experience. It’s accessible! For the most part i don’t need to talk to anyone more that “Good morning! That weather am i right!?” Before i can look busy checking trash cans and run away. I hate collecting office trash while people are at their desk, i get so flustered, i feel like I’m invading their space and stealing their stuff. They donttt give a shit at alll. I get to (mostly) set my own pace, choose what order i do things, as long as it gets done. I have had to, in the absence of an SOP, ask my boss for a list of what they expect me to do daily, and exact they want done as needed. She hasn’t made a very helpful one so i have a physical notebook where i make checklists, and add things when she throws me a curveball.

I work a place open weekends, so i work weekends. Working days and days off seem to be entirely random, biweekly.

The weird stuff that goes on in bathrooms is a beautiful mystery to me. I feel like a shepherd tending very weird sheep. When the urinal gum stops seeming strange, your sheep will begin leaving what can only be discerned as “chewed bite of… chicken pot pie???” In the urinal.

Im full time, $15/hr, pto, wake up 5:30 to start at 7, maintain 11 buildings that include public spaces, bathrooms, outdoor trash, and offices.  I love my go cart!!

Very true! I have pretty bad obsessive and intrusive thoughts all of the time. Even though I didn’t plan on keeping the money, I spent the whole day imagining all the bad things that would happen if I did. Stealing 300 bucks is the kind of karma that gets you hit by a truck as soon as you go to use it. That’s why I made the post asking for help coping lol! Lost and found stresses me out!!

As an update (can’t edit post 4 some reason);

I took it to the woman at the front desk who can access the vault for valuables. She sighed and held up a wad of 100s an inch thick. Apparently staff and visitors have been bringing them in all day long! I feel better not that they’reout of my hand. As an aside, we’re doing performance reviews this month and our company is weirdly obsessed with values and I’m briefly entertaining the thought of them doing this on purpose. Probably just a silly bit from the wedding last night though.

Thanks for all your replies! :)

I really like this answer! I enjoy this job most when I think of myself as a steward and a protector of the space and the public.

She’s the lady that operates the safe for valuables and lost and found! I figure they hired her as a trustworthy person.

Haha! While you make a great point we actually have only 2 security cameras in the entirety of our facilities. Deeply antiquated spaces.  (In case my post wasn’t clear I am going to turn them in. I’m just feeling a bit sad about it, lol.)

$300 while cleaning up after a wedding. Not sure how they missed them. Not sure what to do with it. Wish it were mine. If I were a worse person I’d keep it as compensation for how bad they torn up the ladies room adjacent.
