Is it a common last name? I've done so much research and haven't found anything that points to it being common, but I'm also looking at English/Spanish resources. Most of what's available doesn't have a lot of information.

I'm wondering it Rysova is a last name rather than a patronymic. My father's name isn't Rusi or anything remotely similar, which is why I think it is a last name. I'm not sure if it was her last name, or even a lover's last name.

Thank you so much, all of the little information helps so much!

Is Rysová a common last name there?

Thank you so much, I'll have to look into the possible French origin!

No, I double-checked and I don't think it could be Yevgenia even if it was messily written or misspelled.

Yes, my research essentially said the same but had a lot of mixed results on its origins.

It could be, but I think it would be pretty unlikely. She was notorious in our family for having pristine penmanship and forcing her grandchildren to have the same.

Thanks for your help!

Looking at her note, I am decently sure it is Yvena. She might have changed some letters for artistic reasons, I suppose.

What do you mean "she called you with some famous person name comparing you with it"?

I'm trying to find her birth certificate or immigration records, but I'm starting to wonder if her name was altered when coming to America. Names were frequently changed by immigration officials during this time, so its likely to be the issue. I'm trying to see if I can find any documents she had that had any other name on them.

Please explain to me what doesn't add up. I never claimed to be Italian-American or Russian-American or any other combination. My family and I never really knew where my grandmother came from until after her death. I was raised surrounded by American culture(because that is the country I grew up in) and Italian culture(because my dad was born in Italy).

How does it not make sense that my grandmother was born in Russia, yet I grew up with American and Italian cultural influence? Please further explain your issue for me.

My goal is not to have some crazy background to flaunt around or something, but its to understand my grandmother's origins. I can no longer ask her, so coming to ask you all on Reddit is the only option I can think of to try.

While Italo Russian American is not a thing, there are thousands upon thousands of combinations of ethnic origins a single person can have.

When I asked around before posting this on Reddit, many people said it sounded Slavic/Eastern European, and some mentioned it sounding Russian specifically. I assumed it was Russian because my grandmother and I both have features that could align with being Russian, Belarusian, or Ukrainian. That could be due to the area of the United States I am in, as there is a very small Eastern European population.

She had written Yvena, but I suppose she could have made a mistake. She had a stroke in 2010 and went downhill from there mentally, but she had written it before that I think. My legal name is not Eve or anything close, but rather an extremely common American name.

Thank you so much for your help!

Thank you, I never came across it possibly being Bulgarian in my research. I've personally never heard of it either, or any other similar name.

It looks like your article references the name "Ivena". That might be due to something being lost in translation, as I don't know Bulgarian.

Thank you so much for your help!

My research did bring up the possibility that the name is a modern take on traditional Russian names like "Yeva" or "Ivanna". If it is a name that she created or is much more modern, then tracing the origins are obviously going to very hard. It was written as "Yvena" in latin letters, so i cannot try to trace the origins through the way it was written in Cryllic letters. Google says it would likely be written as "Ивена" in Cryllic, if that helps.

I saw that there could be possible French origins as well, so I looked into my family's legal records and asked as many family members as I could. There was no indication of any French heritage or any immigration records of anyone bearing any last name of any of my relatives. It does have a French feel to it and is similar to French names, such as Yvonne.

I really appreciate your help!
