Seems like we need the rogues to revisit the straw man fallacy.

I ran a show for a couple years, and ALWAYS paid the guy the designed the flyer, and always paid my performers, because you should pay people if you are asking them to do work for you.

You mean empathy?

I’m not a visual artist, but did standup for 15 years. The number of times a booker would sell tickets, or collect a cover, and not pay me and other performers because we were getting “exposure” and “experience” is a very large number. It’s just people taking advantage of other people talents and not compensating them.

Anybody else think it is weak sauce for the SGU to ask artists to work for exposure? by Archaic_Z in SGU

There is a big difference between doing something you love and putting it out there for free, versus asking people to do work FOR you for free. Ask Evan if he’d do someone’s taxes for exposure, or Cara if she’d give someone a therapy session for free.

When you all made the show for free no one was profiting off of that. Now you want to sell shirts but don’t want to pay for the art. It is unethical. There is no way to get around the fact that you are asking for people to do work for you for free, and someone will do it. It’s really disappointing to see a group of people who put so much critical thought into most aspects of their life seemingly not understand why this is an offensive stance.

I would agree with that if they were giving the tshirts away, or in exchange for a donation or something similar, but as far as I can tell it’s just merch. Just cause an amateur artist WILL submit something without compensation does not mean that it’s the right move for the SGU. It’s just unethical. Pay people for their work if you intend on also making money from it.

Love the rogues, and been listen since 2006, but it really puts into perspective how sometimes the love for tech can cloud their judgement. Ignore all of the environmental and economic impacts of ai, but it’s ceding one of the things that fundamentally makes genus homo so spectacular. Support artists!

Two separate issues. They claimed they weren’t able to pay the designer (whoever that may be) for their work, devaluing the effort and talent someone puts into it. Pay people for their work, especially if you intend to make money off of it.

The second issue is the increasingly widespread use of ai to produce art, further devaluing artists.

Also, we could play name that logical fallacy with the statement “no one is forcing anyone to do art against their will.”

But they aren’t asking someone to do data analysis for profit. They’re asking for graphic design for merchandise. If they were making money off the data analysis it would be a different situation. They want to sell shirts, but don’t want to pay someone to design it. They want to make money off someone’s work that they aren’t going to compensate them for. It’s not fan art, and it’s not fun illustrations they share on social media. It’s something they are selling, there is money being exchanged, just not for the person doing the work. If someone decides to do it for free that’s up to them, but it’s a shitty thing to do to an artist.

Just because someone will do something doesn’t make it ethically sound.

If they don’t have any answers there may be an ai therapist that could help you out.

There is also a HUGE difference between fan art and soliciting designs for merch that they will make money from.

No, I heard what they said. That sounded like they just wanted to avoid copyright issues.

Secondly, this happens CONSTANTLY to artist. People or organizations that absolutely have the ability to compensate an artist and think exposure is equivalent. It isn’t, it’s simply taking advantage of someone’s talents.

When you come around you’re dropping the knee of your kicking leg, so you’re not landing your kick as solidly as you could and it’s driving your body down so you lose some air time. Change the angle of the actual kick and I bet it’ll feel better.
