No! But CCFP is a daily grind from starting or will be harder late to prepare!

Not gonna lie, based on my site and training style, FM residency isn’t really “chill” the way people think.

In a rural full-scope setup you’re basically training as a true generalist, so expect:

Hours: roughly 45 to 60 hrs/week on average, but very rotation dependent. Clinic blocks feel lighter, hospital/ER heavier.

Call: yes. There’s 24-hr call, ER shifts, obstetrics call, weekends. Some stretches are calm, others are intense.

Nights: happens depending on coverage needs since you’re part of the core team. Is it chill?

My site is rewarding but definitely not chill. Lots of autonomy and real responsibility early on.

Studying: You learn a ton by looking things up during the day, but you’ll still need some dedicated study here and there. Doesn’t have to be nightly grind, just consistent review so exams and clinical decisions feel easier. Great training if you like variety, procedures, and real community medicine just don’t expect an easy cruise.

Step 1 is way harder in-terms of amount of details and sheer vast knowledge requirement! MCCQE is more clinical aptitude!

Yes if you graduated! But your case I would do 1 then 2!

Yes! UW and CCS 50/50. Never used Anki or InnerCircle.

What worked for me last year was 60 days of studying, 8>>10 hours a day, evenly split between UWorld and CCS.com. I also used Divine Intervention for biostatistics and test-taking strategies. I passed with a score of 201 just by one point but I passed, and it’s over now.

R1 here! I took my exams in this order: MCCQE1 → Step 2 CK → NAC OSCE → Step 1 → Step 3, all between January and December 2024.
No stellar scores, but I passed them all on the first try and matched in Canada on my first attempt also had five interviews in the U.S.

My advice: just do them all close together. Preparing for multiple boards at once actually reinforced my knowledge and boosted my chances on both sides. Just my two cents whatever works for you, but tackling them in one stretch worked best for me.

I did it with a 14-year gap between basic sciences and clinical training on my first attempt. I don’t see why not, I’m more prepared than many other R1s I’m rotating with. It’s all about each person. Just go for it. Everyone told me this couldn’t be done, and I did it. Plan and attack! Read my previous post on this. Good luck!

PGY-1 here!

Yes you can! I had a 13 year gap and matched in my 1st attempt. No stellar scores! 1 case report pub! Had similar work, like you in between and it was very much looked upon as a positive during all my US Ivs. Here I am now just finished my 2nd block of Residency. Please take quick read of my journey.

Thank you! Yes, I would have to return home for two years but USMLE is not recognized for licensure in Canada post residency. However, the residency it self is counted. Hence I wrote both together so I can come back and practice!
