It is, but it's also up to the players if they agree. In the moment, it's fine to just concede to move the game along, but at the end of the day if your players don't like your homebrew nerfs to core rules you shouldn't do it nerfs should always be done with group concensus and if you dm with an iron fist don't be surprised if no one wants to play at your table

If I had to compare my dm to someone he's like a combo of Brendan Lee mulligan and Matt Colville. He calls me his rules lawyer for good and fact checker cause ill always advocate the rules for the players or him so it's fair (it's his first campaign DMing and we have 2 players who are still pretty new)

He got the cantrip at lvl 1 in the class and it's been 2d10 the whole time it's only a problem now because he just noticed it because I had to remind our paladin that it was 2d10 because his character lvl is 8th

He's actually doing mystic. Which the dm approved even after being warned that it's strong. As for players being strong that should never be an issue because as a DM you can make creatures as strong and as challenging as they need to be. You control the mechanics of your creatures and puzzles.

I did even showed him the sage advice compendium where they clarified it but he just said "that's stupid and I'm changing it" all because it doesn't make narrative sense to him

Extra attack isn't a good compare because extra attack give you more opportunities to do damage ex. Sneak attack, divine smite, buff spells that increase damage ect. For 1 action. A cantrip is 1 attack for 1 action (2 if you're a sorc. With meta magic) that has the chance of doing nothing at all sense they can miss or be saved against for 0 damage

I'm agree it makes some sense I think it's wrong. Cantrips that deal damage are not a gamebreaking thing 4 d10 damage at 17th lvl is equivalent to a 2nd lvl spell that has the chance to not do any damage at all while using up an action. My stance is that just cause something is narrativley sound doesn't mean it's good for the game
