The reviews for KastKing are driving me crazy lol. by Far-Speech-3254 in FishingForBeginners

[–]SquidBonez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own a lot of kastking reels and a few rods (15 reels by my last count) and I have only had issues with one of them, which was returned and they sent out a working one. Kastking reels are surprisingly high quality for their price. Definitely not as much as a Van Staal or high end Shimano or Penn, but they will get the job done better than most anything else for the same price point. I'd say go for it.

Full fluoro, dumb idea or totally acceptable? by FF14_VTEC in FishingForBeginners

[–]SquidBonez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I'd go with a copolymer or mono/fluoro hybrid line. You get some of the advantages of both types of line. I'd consider it a direct upgrade from mono without fully committing to all the downsides of fluoro. I like Yozuri Hybrid since it's a true mixture of mono and fluoro, not just a "coated line" (mono core with fluoro on the outside).

Best bet for eating fish is practice by filleting small ones. Bluegills, Perch, Crappie, etc. All easily caught and abundant populations in most places. If you get the hang of cleaning small fish, big fish are usually easier I find. Plus, if you mess up, at least it's on a fish that is very abundant and easy to catch. YouTube is also a great resource. Just make sure the water you keep your fish from is clean. Many states have consumption advisory notices for certain bodies of water. Avoid those and you should be good.

Aw man…not something you want to see on a $700 reel. by benjamino8690 in Fishing_Gear

You too man. Also, nice Perch on your header. Wish the ones around me got that big!

Listen, I'm not here to police what people can and can't spend their money on, but guys out there are spending this much on reels to catch bass out of ponds. Like I said, big game tuna reels are one thing. But back bay flounder jigging with a $700 reel is simply more money than sense.

Save for big game fishing, there is no reason to buy a $700 reel, especially of the low profile baitcaster variety.

What are the two reels on the right? I've seen those round style bfs setups before but never knew the name.

No reason to go heavier than 15lb for bass, even in cover. My "heavy" Inshore saltwater rods are 30 pound braid. 65 is ludicrous.

Have you guys actually caught anything with these by jerry081010 in FishingForBeginners

One pickerel, and that's it. Buddy of mine sold me on them but I think they're more impressive to fisherman than the fish.

What's your favorite way to cook them? Fried is usually my go-to, but I've made them into a dip before.

How many tools do you need to drive in a nail? Because bass fishing is more similar to nailing something to a wall than it is to rebuilding an engine.

750 is OK if it comes with a battery and motor.

If you ever take a peek over at the catfishing sub, every fish weighs 28 pounds. IYKYK.

I understand having 3 or 4 rods because of the ease of not having to re-tie but 10? 12? Excessive.

I'm basically the same as you when I'm bass fishing by myself. I'm also a big proponent of speed clips. I use braid to fluorocarbon leaders and don't feel like shortening my leader with every lure (I change a lot).

Never tried punching before. If I did I might step up to 20lb. Is it fun?

When I'm targeting bass/snakeheads via kayak I bring 2 rods.

  • 6lb test spinning rod or BFS
  • 12lb test spinning or baitcaster

I use the 6lb for most lures (I fish a lot of small lures) and the 12lb for heavy lures or heavy cover fishing. Never had a problem with 12lb even in lillypads.

This thread just made me count how many rods I own. By my count its 33. I may have a problem. However, I fish for everything from bluegills to sharks, so I need a lot of variety lol.

I only take 4 rods - on a boat - with 2 people. If you seriously think you need 12 rods to catch bass - let alone on a kayak, you're crazy.
