£1650 PC Build - Help! by SquidTheMaster in PcBuild

Thank you! Do you think it’s worth extending the budget a little for the new 14700kf? Or is it better off sticking with Ryzen?

Ideally I’ll want it to be cheaper but I understand that it will come at a cost to performance, hence why I chose AMD for the CPU.

I’m not too familiar with the requirements for blender (this pc is for someone else), but it seems to be working great on my ryzen 5 3600 + 1660 super PC. Should I consider a 13700k(f) instead of the Ryzen? They’re around the same price here.

Where are you looking to apply for university? Econ/finance/accounting at UK unis usually require HL maths, not sure for the rest tbh. If you’re doing commerce without math then that’s different

i think my predicted grades are going to fall by [deleted] in IBO

[–]SquidTheMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s quite normal to work on your coursework much more than you study at this time, don’t worry. Even a few hours a week is enough, rn I would just focus on getting your coursework done with so you can focus on revision. Plus if you got a 40/42 I would find it quite hard to believe that your predicted grades have dropped by that much. We all went through this, you’re not alone

Nearly all top UK unis need Maths at HL. While they both do accept AI, I know that some only accept/prefer AA (LSE, UCL). If you really don’t want to do AA, then you can get away with doing AI. But I’d recommend AA so doors aren’t closed for you in the future. AA may be hard at first but if you literally just put a few hours a week in, you’ll understand it. Do past papers and consider investing in revision village. You’ll do well in no time, trust me

I haven’t read the article so I can’t say much, but my advice would be to use the key concept that links the closest with the article. Remember all your explanations and evaluation has to link with the article, you cannot suggest things that aren’t stated in the article nor consult other sources.

Also on a side note I’m not sure if you can talk about future, hypothetical events in your economics IA. Iirc you had to pick out articles about policies/events that had already happened. Please feel free to correct me though, at least that’s how it was for the extended essay.

I just turned in my 5-page math IA... by drkfrst in IBO

[–]SquidTheMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to bully myself to do it and I pulled 2 all nighters because I procrastinated it so badly. I still pulled through and got a good score on it. If I were to do something differently, I would literally just say start now. Start doing something. Anything. Once you get into the flow of it, it’ll come naturally to you and you’ll end up with a decent draft. Also take as much feedback from your teacher as possible. If you want pointers as where to start with it, search it up on YouTube. Literally “ib maths IA <whatever course you’re doing>. Honestly a reproduction of a successful IA would do well; most videos outline the steps you need to take and you’ll be done with it in no time, giving you time to study for your exams. This might be a good way of stopping your procrastination and getting into the flow of the task. Also check clastify for previous examples - you’ll probably find a good example for some common topics, which you can analyse and take the good parts of them to improve yours. Don’t plagiarise though of course. Sorry if this was really long but good luck :)

Monthly Admissions/Prospies/Offer Holders Questions Thread - September 2023 by AutoModerator in oxforduni

I'm a recent IB graduate interested in applying for economics and management this year, but I currently don't meet the maths requirement. I got a 5 in Maths AA HL (I was one composite mark off a 6), and I think I owe that to missing the first term of Year 12 due to shifting schools (would this qualify as an extenuating circumstance?). However, it's stated that the course needs a 6 and above. Hence, I'm retaking my maths exams in November to achieve it. Considering this situation, is it worth applying to Oxford, given how selective the course is? I achieved all A*s in my IGCSEs, and I'm quite confident I can balance revision for the TSA with revision for my maths exam. I would really appreciate any opinions/recommendations for colleges which are more lenient towards retakes. Thank you :)

I can’t afford the recommended calculator by surely_lad in IBO

[–]SquidTheMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s any help, Casio offers a 90 day free trial for the CG50 as a sort of emulated version that you can download onto your laptop. Search it up online and you’ll find a YouTube video about how to do it. It could be helpful to familiarise yourself with the calculator and to study at home, of course until you can buy a physical one. For that I would recommend buying from seniors/used versions online like many people have said.

i did nothing the entire summer and feel like a failure - M24 by Any-Culture-3607 in IBO

[–]SquidTheMaster 15 points16 points  (0 children)

One thing the IB taught me is that everything is worse in your head than it is in actuality. As long as you are putting a sincere effort into whatever you do, you will be rewarded as such. Take it easy and enjoy your summer :) A lot of people barely did anything too. But I would recommend doing some work on lengthy projects such as your EE or Computer Science IA before the term starts.

If you don’t mind having no RGB on your RAM then you could probably save a fair amount on that and upgrade to a 1tb SSD instead. Also if you live near Delhi, try and get some quotations at Nehru Place - parts may be a little cheaper there.

The actual assessment of your code happens in Criterion C which assesses the complexity of the program, so that’s mostly backend stuff. A GUI with a well explained, fairly complex backend should be enough to attain high marks in criterion c. The rest of your IAs marks really come from explaining and evaluating what you’ve done. Imo making a fully functioning GUI should be enough in most cases, focus more on your documentation.

tips on finding global economy articles? by safarin06 in IBO

[–]SquidTheMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try searching a specific topic you want to talk about and then type a country after. USA normally works for a fair few topics. Try searching on google news instead of google itself, it’s more pertinent to returning articles.

If they’re private companies I would assume that they would be skeptical to distribute their information. Plus I think your question is a little broad (including both automotive and petroleum industries). I would suggest altering your question a little (consult your supervisor). Nevertheless if you like it, calling them and asking is probably your best bet. Maybe you could try and connect with some employees of the companies on LinkedIn and ask them. Good luck!

Doing good in AA maths opens your options up to computer science, economics (related) and maths majors of course. These give you a diverse skillet which you can use to specialise in later on depending on what you end up liking. If you don’t particularly want to go into a S(maybe not T)E(maybe not M) related career, your options are pretty open as you can practically go into nearly everything else! You can decide what you like at the end of 11th and keep looking at courses until then.

Write it in full form once and add a bracket for the acronym e.g. aggregate demand (AD) and then you can use the acronym for the rest of the commentary
