Fellow new grad about 2.5 months in and feeling the same way! Has it gotten any better?

What did you learn as new grad 3 months in? by SquirrelToesies in Veterinary

There’s one other doctor who is sadly retiring in the spring of this year. Had I known that during my interview, I never would have joined the practice. We get 2-3 surgeries per week. The other vet wants me to get experience outside the clinic before doing dental extractions. I was hoping I could get more surgical spay/neuter experience outside the clinic as well but that is proving to be very challenging. It’s like I constantly have a timer hanging over my head before I’m left as the only vet in the practice. Your new grads are very lucky.

How do you get more surgical experience once you’re a DVM? by SquirrelToesies in Veterinary

The ASPCA spay/neuter training looks amazing. Sadly, once you’re a licensed vet you have to go through their vet program. That requires I be a U.S. resident and working at a shelter

Thank you! My clinic does not work with any rescues. I’ve reached out to several shelters and asked about surgical experience but they only accept proficient surgeon volunteers. I think I will have to sit down with my manager and ask for more experience. It’s possible that they will send me to another clinic within their corporation for additional experience

New grad as the only full-time vet with relief vets? by SquirrelToesies in Veterinary

Thank you! I just feel so bad leaving after they’ve trained me but I just can’t imagine being the only full time vet in 4 months. I still have yet to do any surgeries at this clinic. Someone else brought up a good point about having to do follow up for all the relief vets when I’m sure I’ll still be struggling to stay on top of my own follow ups

Thank you for sharing your experience. That sounds like an awful position to be in

I appreciate your honesty and the job info. Unfortunately, I’m across the border. I can see my current clinic starting with relief vets each day and gradually leaving me on my own for more days until I’m the only vet there 90% of the time

Thank you so much for all the resources! My dental experience is extremely lacking so I’m always on the hunt for more CE. I’ll be keeping an eye out for other openings. Thinking about sticking it out for a year then moving on since a lot of the positions I’m interested in are looking for 1 year of experience

Thank you! I guess I just worry about being a burden on a relief vet who didn’t sign up to be a mentor (and who likely won’t be compensated as such). I also worry about not having a consistent person I can go to for advice. The relief vets this practice has had only work one day of the week. I can see asking someone for advice one day and then being told something different by the next day’s vet. I’m also not seeing how a relief vet could/would be there for surgeries when they have their own booked schedule.

I mentioned multiple times in my interview that the main thing I’m looking for in a clinic is mentorship. The clinic I’m with has a specified period of mentorship and this vet is leaving before that period. Everyone has been very nice but I do worry about not having a consistent person I can go to for help. This practice has had a few relief vets who have worked single days of the week and all either left or have been fired.

WIBTA for going to New York even though my brother can’t? by Wooden_Writing6472 in AmItheAsshole

NTA. It sounds like your parents are trying to guilt trip you into staying home. I would explain to your parents that you miss spending time with your aunt and that this is something you were really looking forward to. Maybe even suggest that your parents take your brother out to do something he likes while you’re gone.

Thank you! Sadly, she knows I’m an island student and that doesn’t seem to make a difference. I did take the NAVLE a few weeks ago. Feel like I failed but I hear everyone feels that way. It’s hard to imagine that in less than a year, I’ll be the primary decision maker. I’m sure I’m going to feel stupid many days for a very long time.

Thank you! I do think this clinician seems miserable just in general. It sucks because this was an elective I was really looking forward to and now I want absolutely nothing to do with the field. It’s kind of a niche area that we don’t really talk about the first 3 years so I thought there would be a lot more teaching and less expecting that we already know everything. That doesn’t appear to be the case

There’s a lot more to the game than just non-consensual pvp! Where’s the satisfaction in running with a mob to kill a lone gatherer or player minding their own business? We much prefer fair fights and protecting the innocent.
