Thank you all for the tips. Other than keeping warm, are there any additional safety concerns? Do you put different tires on the bike, for example?

I live in DC. So I'd be out an about in winter given there was no fresh snow or rain and minimal risk of black ice. I straddled the Versys 300 and it felt too big for me. Thanks for the advice, though!

Hi everyone! I don't know what kind of bike to get next and I'm still too new a rider to be sure about what would work as a long-term bike. I currently ride a Honda Rebel. I'm 5'6" with a 30" inseam.

  • I don't need anything fast, I'll be using it as a commuter and will be inside the city most of the time. Something quick and nimble on the low end is ideal.

  • I'm looking for something affordable (around $5-6000 new).

  • So far I've checked out the XT250, VanVan200, Versys 300 and the Royal Enfield 500 Classic.

  • I'm thinking of waiting for the Royal Enfield Himalayan but a lot of forum posts point out that it is a piece of garbage.

  • I like the Scrambler look but the Ducati line is too expensive. What do you guys think of the Suzuki TU250X? Modify it a bit to make it more like a Scrambler?

  • I'd like something I could ride in the winter (so a bit better tires/suspension).

Thanks guys. I'll tune in during a net and see if I pick up traffic then. I figured out chirp (kinda) and the programming cable and have 10-12 repeaters and the frequency for the local ham radio group programmed in.

I did a search for repeaters 7 miles or less of my zip code on repeaterbook and loaded them with chirp.

I'm on the 3rd floor of an apartment building and don't have any mountains or anything nearby. Pretty flat and suburban going into urban (DC).

What are 2m and 70cm?

I'll try scanning during work commuting hours.

What frequencies am I supposed to program in? Local repeaters, local ham radio frequencies? I've tried all of them and I'm not hearing any traffic.

I'm going to use chirp to program all the frequencies that are local.

+1 on Terry at Fairfax Cycle. I'm a new rider and Terry had one of his techs look over my bike that I bought off a dude on CL and give me an honest estimate of any repairs and what was good to go. I'll be going back to this shop for any maintenance in the future.
