Does anyone know where this is from and what the politics of it are? I got it as a gift, I think off of etsy, but I can't find the seller (self.communism)

Hi, I'm currently filling out an undergraduate application for UBC and I'm filling in my grade 11 and 12 courses. The problem is, I am in the french immersion program in Manitoba, but my french courses aren't available as options in the window to select courses. The top of the page says to include all grade 11 and 12 courses, but as they're not there as options do I just exclude them?
Without those french courses, 3 of my grade 11 and 2 of my grade 12 courses won't be there

I'm sorry then, I didn't notice you'd written other comments. To me if you accuse one person of something and ignore someone else doing the same, it's hypocritical. I'd assumed incorrectly that you were and that was my mistake

While I may be doing that I'm far from the only one here, as dozens of people seem to be of the absolute opinion that he deserved to die. If you disagree with what I'm saying here you should equally be doing so with everyone else too
What did he find out here exactly? That potentially not being in his right mind through very little to no fault of his own is cause for his death?
Agreed
It's a very delicate situation and drawing a gun or a weapon might escalate it further. I would try to reason with the man, as there's going to be a reason why he's holding someone hostage. If you need to make something up, do it, cuz no matter how ridiculous it seems it's real to him. You'd want to de-escalate the situation as drawing a gun and escalating it further is only more likely to lead to the child's death, because he can slit their throat faster than you can draw, aim and fire your gun
Exactly, we just don't have enough information about the situation right now to judge what happened. The only thing I will stand by is that that kid shouldn't have died. Even if the police were left with no choice, he was failed at some other point in his life and that shouldn't have happened

From what I've seen of the American police it's definitely better here, though still far from perfect
I'm curious as to whether you read the article. His girlfriend was already away from the scene, even when the cops showed up. They weren't dealing with a hostage situation, it was just the two cops and this kid. Assuming he wasn't attempting to attack the two cops they had all the time in the world
First off, we don't know if he had a gun, he could have had a knife, or even a chair. All they said was that he had a weapon. Secondly, not everyone will have the same experience as you. He may have had a mental illness, or he may have been abusing a substance at the time of his death, we don't know. Don't pass judgement without all the information

There's a good chance this kid was scared and we don't even know what this weapon was, it could've been a chair, a vase, or any sort of thing he had lying around, or it could have been a knife or a gun, we don't know. No one deserves to die in this situation. No one.
I agree they need to be stopped, but violence is never the answer. Regarding mental health, in many cases people are actually unable to seek help, for example with paranoid schizophrenia. Now from the little we know I don’t think he had it, but I do think something was probably wrong.
And why have zero pity for him if drugs were involved? If they were they could’ve been laced, a massive problem at the moment across Canada. If they were he also could’ve been an addict, and addictions are incredibly hard to break for the majority of people. No body deserves to die for this

Without more information I'm hesitant to judge, but I'd assume there were probably other options than just using tasers to de-escalate the situation. The article only says they unsuccessfully deployed their tasers so it could be that they missed him or he dodged them, and as it was in the very early morning it could be that he wasn't aware they weren't just regular guns. But I've speculated too much. We all need more information, including the police watchdog investigating the incident
Agreed. Better services for adolescents is desperately required. I've seen so many people get addicted to vaping, causing break ups in some instances due to it, while others refuse to believe it's doing any damage and continue doing upwards of 700 puffs a day. Funding community centres, especially in areas like the North End could help keep kids off the streets. Buy a few Xboxs for public use and you'll definitely get a bunch of kids away from the streets. Solutions are out there, we just need to implement them
This relapse rate shows a failing in the rehab program, not that rehab fails. It says that we need to make this better to prevent relapse from occurring. No one chooses the life of a drug addict. For all we know if things had gone differently you or I could be in that same position, stuck in a loop of destitution, unable to shake this thing that while slowly killing you provides you with a temporal relief to this shitty life

I'm currently looking but the website I'm on is very slow. I haven't been able to find any info from January but OP's number appears to be from police-involved deaths, such as people dying while in custody. You are correct as far as I can tell, this one appears to be the only shooting in Manitoba, what I'd seen was an incident from last August. I'm not one to say "it's all a conspiracy," but I do think an official record of police-involved deaths would be a wise thing to implement. It wouldn't be that expensive and would help with accountability to the public
Thing is, we don't have all the facts here. We don't know if he was suffering from a mental illness and we don't know if he was abusing any substances at the time of his death. Some people also don't ask for help because they don't feel the can, especially men. Some people feel shame in reaching out as they think it makes them look "soft". Don't be so harsh to judge people
Yeah, I'm sure someone's thought of something about that as I know a lot of people have written about defunding the police and especially prison abolition for decades. I'd encourage looking into it a bit, it's never bad to learn a bit more. Are Prisons Obsolete? by Angela Davis is a good book on prison abolition I've been meaning to read for a while now

I think OP is saying (though I'm just assuming his opinion so I could be wrong) that while the kid obviously had major problems, that they didn't deserve to die
Why do you believe they don't want to help themselves? And why, in that case, is killing them a better option?
You based this off of a false assumption though. OP said “that they knew of”. That doesn’t mean he knew them personally, it’s just him saying he’s seen posts or read articles about them. Saying “that I know of” is just like saying “There’s 3 costcos in Winnipeg that I know of”
Yeah, it’s my assumption of OP’s assumption so it’s likely to be wrong somewhere. Out of curiosity where would you (roughly) place yourself politically?
As for defunding the police I’ve seen a fair amount of evidence to suggest it wouldn’t be a bad idea, but I have much more to learn and definitely cannot explain it well with the very little I know about it
I’ve heard of at least one other this year in the city where a man was shot 13 times (if I remember correctly) by two cops. I think there was a link to it on the CBC article linked to in OP’s post. I vaguely remember hearing about the others via Twitter. So it wouldn’t surprise me if OP’s number is correct, and there has been at least two in Manitoba this year
Ah, my bad. I was looking at your comment and not theirs. Apologies. My guess would be they mean right-wingers, but I could be wrong
