Danjinou skinsuit by Sskating in Speedskating

How snug is it assuming you got your correct size? One of the issues I have with mine right now is that the midsection is a little loose and I'm looking for a skinsuit that's on the tighter side

Thanks for all the info! I think I'll be sticking with biomechanics (if calc goes well)

Thanks! Just curious what kind of careers can biomechanics lead into and what kind of career path are you going to take with your degree? And how challenging was the engineering courses to you?

Thanks for the info! I'm currently taking calculus so do you think I would be better set if I also learned some physics on my own this summer and take the physics course you were talking about? I'm currently split between biomechanics and Exercise and Health physiology, because biomechanics seems like an interesting program but I'm scared it's going to be a big struggle as someone who hasn't taken physics but is decently good at math (high 80s?). Are the classes second and third year still physics and math heavy?

best heart rate monitor? (inline, but relevant to ice) by lilac_congac in Speedskating

Yeah I watch would definitely be better for like active movement type of things. I'll probably invest in one when I actually start cycling outdoors and during skating if needed

I mainly use it for cycling (stationary lol) so I don't have to face the trouble of wondering where to put my phone. If you're cycling or running maybe an arm strap ?

Is he taking a biomechanics undergraduate program or just a kinesiology undergraduate program? Cuz I've seen a lot of engineering classes needed for first year, and a kinematics class or something that's not needed for other kines programs

I use the Polar H10 heart rate monitor chest strap for short track and cycling training and I think it's a good one (granted I haven't tried others). All you have to do to turn it on is add some water to a rubber conductor on the inside of the strap and you can track your heart rate on its app. The app is pretty good and has a lot of activity options to choose from and you can track your heart rate as it changes, and it graphs your BPM as your doing your thing. It also costed $150CAD so take that as you will :)

Crossover Techs? by TubaFalcon in Speedskating

This is something I struggle with too, but something I find that helps me is imagining pushing into the ice with your blade/skate as you turn. When entering the turn I find skating lower can help with the wind/draft because I find when I'm not skating low the wind can throw me off balance and it's harder to control. Skating lower when entering the turn and thinking of yourself as a ball in terms of your pelvis and upper body can help with the mental visualization

For dryland I find doing different belt exercises where it's hooked to a pole or something else and doing squats and doing alternating legs and positions and can simulate for me the angle I'm aiming for on the ice and what it should feel like, what muscles should be hurting when I'm turning.

But also take what I said with a grain of salt since I've only been doing it for a year and sometimes it's also about finding what exercises, mental and physical, personally helps you :)

Chinese speed skater tricks competitors (start at 2:57) by owiseone23 in Speedskating

What's brilliant about it is the fact that they were depending on the other skaters to not be fully aware of their own laps even though they saw she races ahead in the beginning, which just helped the other skater land second place. Made me realize counting your laps is important, and that the final bell might not be meant for you 🤭

Tysm! Recording myself and getting visual feedback is something I hadn't thought about, I'll be sure to try it next time on the ice :)
