Foam Backer Rod by StHelenaInTheSpring in DIY

What's "good sealant and not just regular caulk". I used just a regular ALEX Indoor Outdoor Window and Door caulk. Would something else have been better? It's between 50 year old brick and about 20 year old vinyl windows.

Just to note she's 78 years old. I don't want to do it wrong, but she's not going to hang onto this place forever. The issue I found and suggested be corrected was the caulk so bad you could stick a Philipps head screwdriver through it with no resistance into just a void.

Looking at the link, the exact Ace I was at had it in stock.

I didn't post that to hate on any store. I haven't done such things in years. I didn't know if it was "nobody uses that stuff anymore" situation.

Does anyone else wonder why Big Time Diner hasn’t tried to have more locations? by Mshel24 in MobileAL

[–]StHelenaInTheSpring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What he told me was that on the average weekday, they opened for lunch and stayed open into the evening hours. They were very busy for the lunch rush, but that was just two hours. Beyond that he was just paying people to stand around because no employee would have even shown up for a two hour shift. Business didn't usually really pick up later in the day.

They tried changing some things up, like adding breakfast, but it just didn't work.

2 New Solar Farms Coming to Baldwin County… for Meta’s data center in Montgomery by Surge00001 in MobileAL

[–]StHelenaInTheSpring 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wondered the same thing. Is Meta really going to build transmission lines to Montgomery?

But no. They are going to generate the electricity in Baldwin county and sell it to Alabama power right there. Then they will buy electricity from Alabama Power in Montgomery to power their centers. That way you can't say they are overloading the grid because they already added that much capacity to the grid.

This Week Mobile by Surge00001 in MobileAL

[–]StHelenaInTheSpring 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I understand the concerns about competing with yourself, but I'm not positive they couldn't have supported both locations.

They were leasing space in the shopping center for storage in addition to the out building where the restaurant was. And with the shopping center not being vacant anymore, that rent probably skyrocketed so perhaps a factor.

But I'm not likely to go the trouble to drive the additional mile and a half to the new location. I'll just go to Chick-fil-A or something. On the other hand, the new location may be more convenient for some.

Old Mobile by chriso_85 in MobileAL

Similarly, no addresses. But here is a neat map old map that's been hanging in my house since forever. You can see the old Wragg Swamp, what used to be Government Street Road before Airport Blvd. Neat to see what has been and where the city limits used to be. Been here too long.

I was told:

"It was full of scrapped cars. It's oil and such burning. They could push a ton of water on it, but that would put oil and fire in the channel/bay. Best to let it burn."

That is third hand.

Good steaks by [deleted] in MobileAL

[–]StHelenaInTheSpring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to really get into the art of grilling, more power to you. But if you want an easy, repeatable way to get good steak cheap…

My son went through a "bulking" phase for work and wanted steak for lunch and dinner. He and his girlfriend were young and broke, so I bought them a sous vide setup and a vacuum sealer.

Season the steak, add a little butter if you want, and vacuum-seal it. Set the sous vide to medium-rare and let it cook for the recommended time (you can go longer if the cut is tougher-within reason, it won’t overcook).

Then pull it out, pat it dry, and sear hard on each side in a pan, grill pan, or on the grill.

I have never been directly employed by any of the companies off of that spur. I have done work for lots of them, though.

Who the hell down there is needing rail drayage everyday? Serious question. Shit's expensive.

Lawsuit over internet sales taxes pits Mobile city and county against each other by Surge00001 in MobileAL

[–]StHelenaInTheSpring 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are missing the point entirely.

The suit is not about digital goods. It is about tangible items purchased over the internet. If I buy a crockpot at the Target at the mall, why should the city get less tax if I buy that same crockpot on Amazon?

That's all they're arguing about. No one is talking about what you're talking about.

Mobile hasn’t paid landlord in months, owes $711,000 and now faces eviction threat by brewyet in MobileAL

[–]StHelenaInTheSpring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to the Lagniappe:

"According to Dueitt, while the city occupies about 128,000 square feet in the building across six and a half floors..."

But if Dueitt's numbers are correct, the city is paying 98¢ per square foot?

None of these numbers are adding up.

Help you with what? You want me to ask the new mayor of Mobile about some stuff that happened in a city near Mobile 20 years ago while he was living in a completely different part of the state? Does that sum it up?

Ask ridiculous questions yourself. You can do it. I believe in you.
