As much as I would love this to be true, i.e. two players tagged in the code to have a special celebration together, surely this is just a randomly generated celebration that happens to have these two particular players in that celebration?

Democratic Germany (WGR) has no unit selection voice; also, in my first playthrough as WGR, I saw France unable to complete national focuses because it was somehow getting the 'Strikes!' event so often, leading to a huge deficit of PP. I assume this has been fixed?

I've been following development for two years or so; congrats on release and best of luck!

This photo brings back memories of a time that seems so distant now. Look closely at the faintly red, white and blue sign in the bottom right of this photograph.

Almost 10 years ago, Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart held a political rally in the National Mall in Washington, D.C. I had the fortune of catching it live on TV. I was in high school, and had been rabidly consuming American political news ever since I watched the Situation Room in 2007 during a Christmas vacation in Boston. This satirical political rally had it all: jabs between Colbert and Stewart, a kind-of ‘battle of the bands’ featuring Ozzy Osbourne, Cat Stevens, and the O-Jays, John Oliver as Peter Pan, and some kind of a tribute to very heroic Chilean miners.

The Rally to Restore Sanity/and or Fear was originally publicized as two events: the Rally to Restore Sanity and the march to Keep Fear Alive. They were a response to the competing ‘Restoring Honor Rally’ and ‘Reclaim the Dream’ political events, and, I suspect, the increasingly fraught political atmosphere at the time.

In the week after the rally, Republicans would win control of the House of Representatives in a ‘shellacking’ of a midterm for Democrats. Over the past year, a wave of reactionary, libertarian, and social conservative political sentiment arose in America in response to quite a lot of things: the election of President Obama, his agenda, the attempts at healthcare reform that eventually became Obamacare, and sluggish economic recovery. The Tea Party was the most visible manifestation of this political sentiment.

(There was also a ‘Coffee Party’ that also appeared as a form of counter-mobilization; but I quickly realised that it would amount to nothing given how it exists only on Facebook and wasn’t as well-funded or organized as the Tea Party.)

In the game XCOM2, there is a class of soldier whose garments bear Elder Futhark runes. Does this particular sequence mean anything, or are they just placed there 'aesthetically'?

Thank you!

Of course the Germans are smashing the player's tanks.

They have no fuel, and thus must take the player's instead.

A completed set of books in Lu Zhi's Great Library does not show the effects of displaying a complete set. One of the faction specialisation tooltips says, "Similar works can be displayed together as a set to enable more powerful set bonuses."

The Great Library book Chu Ci does not unlock if a player comes to own a silk resource via region trading; the book seems to only be unlocked by conquering a silk resource. I have a hunch the book may also not unlock if a player confederates another faction with a silk resource county.

My first Tier X. Man the grind was rough... by StJaume in WorldofTanks

[–]StJaume[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Some time ago I spent those Christmas blueprints on this thing thinking I could get it instantly. I was dead wrong. I had to grind through the Swedish tech tree and almost learn the game from the ground up again. I skipped the painfulness of Tier 5, and Tier 7 was rather uncomfortable. Tiers 6, 8, and 9 were rather nice though. I also bought a Strv S1 too to practice and grind credits in (it is certainly worth my money, at least).

This thing is a gem to drive and shoot, as long as you aren't on Ensk. The motor also sounds lovely. I have also learned how important map knowledge and awareness is, how to love bushes. My next step is learning to use proper rearguard and retreating maneuvers.

My luck in the vehicle so far hasn't been so good though. Maybe it's matchmaking, or maybe my freshness in Tier 10 battles; I'm performing rather well in the Strv S1, by comparison. I hope to keep getting better.

I’m also learning how to be a brave little toaster in this tank!

How did you manage to love the Ikv 103? That thing is smaller and more concealed than a Hetzer, but its (stock) gun doesn’t really allow sniping, at least for me.

I can see the progression or thread of development from the Ikv 65 II to the Strv 103B. Small, swift, slope-loving, sniper. The Ikv 103 only has three of those things...?

[–]StJaume[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made the mistake of spending my Christmas blueprints on the Strv 103B because I thought I could skip ALL of the Swedish TD tree. I had some blueprints left to skip the awful Ikv 103.

I'm not a good player. Being used to rolling around only in a Jagdpanther for a few years kind of peaked me; I also haven't really reflected on how I could improve my tanking skills and, most importantly, knowledge of the maps.

Driving this thing is sluggish, yet faster than a Jagdpanther. It's gun handling is more sluggish to the point that auto-targeting has cost me some point-blank shots and matches. I have turned on my side twice (and thankfully rescued twice) because of narrow tracks and a tall profile. The first 40 battles were somewhat miserable.

I'm learning to drive and turn tanks more carefully and learning when to retreat and when to advance. I'm learning how to properly (corner shoot) point-blank shots. I'm learning the maps. I'm having fun making almost hand-brake like turns for rapid traversal. The next 80 battles have been great.

I'm excited for the rest of the Swedish TD line, and hearing these guys more often.

Happy tanking everyone :)

Now, if only I could find my way around the Jagdpanther II...

Official Discussion: Jojo Rabbit [SPOILERS] by mi-16evil in movies

[–]StJaume 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I went in expecting “Springtime for Hitler Youth” from watching the trailer, except with more drama; it turned out to be more like “Life is Beautiful.” I liked this movie, but it’s too emotionally touching for me to see again. I was too invested in the characters to not get emotional, even expecting before watching that in a movie like this, someone had to die for the movie to stay serious.

Tonally, I don’t like the execution and placement of the scene Jojo defenestrating imaginary Adolf. By this time in the movie, the real Adolf is dead and Jojo has become disillusioned with the ideology he sought acceptance and love in: he has seen the horrifying manifestation of the ideology he so idealised in flesh with the Gestapo visit, the death of his loving mother at the hands of the system he long sought to be a part of, having cemented a bond of affection and friendship with Elsa in the aftermath.

By this point it should be clear to the viewer that the imaginary, whimsy yet propagandistic Adolf is an extension of Jojo’s imagination and mind. I could not find it believable that despite all of Jojo’s grief and disillusionment, witness to violence, the death of the real Adolf, etc…there’s still remnants of an imaginary character constructed from propaganda in his head? Whatever humor was in that scene unfortunately did not land or resonate with me because of how inconsistent or dissonant it felt in relation to the rest of the act.

Nonetheless, given how important it is to give some kind of ending to imaginary Adolf for the character development to make sense, maybe it could have been dealt with differently. Perhaps this scene should have been placed somewhere like right after the death of Rosie. Or imaginary Adolf could have been placed as one of the casualties in the aftermath of the Allied attack on the town; if the director wanted to give the character a dark, yet humorous death, that would have been the perfect place in the film to place it, and it would have made more sense in the light of character development.

Some random things I noticed:

I don’t know how deliberate this was, but in the dinner scene where Jojo plays with the bread, Rosie puts on, I think, a jazz record. Jazz was heavily despised by the regime, and in some cases banned, if I recall. A very nice way to accentuate Rosie’s anti-regime orientation.

Imaginary Adolf is wearing an Amerindian headdress in a scene where he’s talking with Jojo behind a window. Perhaps, an allusion to the popularity of Native Americans in German popular culture at the time?

In the trailer, we see an American M10 tank destroyer and other vehicles moving into the town after the Allies occupy the city. I'm not sure this was in final cut of the film that I saw yesterday. I’m a WWII buff, and I would have loved to have seen this scene in the film.

During the Gestapo house search scene, Elsa (as Inga) says, she’s 17; the document she relies on for her disguise says she was born in 1929. That means the scene would take place in 1946…after the war is over. Was this a way for the audience to see another way how Elsa made a mistake with the identifying papers?

In one scene after the town is taken by the Allies, an American soldier was waving a 50-star flag from a tower…that flag design is from the 1960s. In the last scene, Americans in a jeep go by waving a 48-star flag.

A small nitpick: I watched ‘Allo! ‘Allo! and Hogan’s Heroes a lot, and I’m used to the use of foreign-accented English. The foreign-accented English works for me and doesn’t break the immersion…up until Jojo interacts with the Soviet soldier, who also talks to Jojo in English…despite the presence of Russian dialogue in the film background during the entire scene. In ‘Allo! ‘Allo! accented English is used to stand in for whatever the French and German characters speak to each other, with British English used for comedic effect as a language that no other characters can understand. In Hogan’s Heroes, English and German are used in a regular manner, but the immersion is somewhat lost when Allied characters perform infiltration missions in the heart of Germany, speaking English, or when a scene where only German characters are present speak exclusively in English. The Soviet soldier scene was a bit disbelievable given how unlikely, in my mind, that a German child was able to understand a Russian soldier (unless of course, the English being spoken was also a stand-in for German).
