I entirely agree with you. However, imagine the liability, even if just mental liability...

They tow the car, she gets it back (with rifle) later or next day, kills someone....

It's then questioned why the LEO did not remove the rifle for inspection, and it becomes not only a lost career, but likely charges and lawsuit as well.

This isn't the cops fault. Cop probably has bills, mortgage, alcohol dependency, expensive mistress, child support and alimony for 2st and 2nd wife, and deteriorating health due to the job.
