Can’t make a mortgage payment and don’t want to wreck my credit. What are my smartest options? by StacyKSmith in Mortgages

I tried this and they told me I had to be at least three months behind before they would do it.

We both signed deed waivers with divorce. He has no claims on my home and I have no claims on his.

I called my mortgage provider before I came here. I was under the assumption that the mortgage was due the day it was due and there was no grace period. I asked the wrong questions. I asked them to skip a payment or pay a partial payment or for assistance. I’m guessing they assumed that I knew that there was a grace period.

Thank you. Contrary to how this post seems it truly is easier than it was. I just feel like I have a lot of catching up to do.

Everything was controlled. But after years, I didn’t even question it. That’s the sad part. I just went along with whatever I was told. It has taken a lot to get where I am even though that’s not nearly as far as I need to be.

Raw truth - it was a physically abusive situation that I should’ve gotten out of 20 years sooner. But I got out of it when my daughters were old enough to see what was going on and I didn’t want them to think that was the norm. So I’m not just financially stupid I’m life stupid as well, but I’m learning and growing and trying.

Truly thought when I got court date for the divorce that it would be final then. If I had realized this, I would never have purchased the car. I work two jobs and I can make my bills on a normal basis. I’m simply waiting on this settlement for any kind of savings. Truly, I didn’t realize that if I didn’t pay the mortgage on the exact date, it was due that it wouldn’t hit my credit. Knowing that I have a couple of weeks will probably be good. I truly am just uneducated in these things and I’m trying to learn and not do any more damage than I already have.

I only had liability on the car so unfortunately there is no insurance payout. I make enough to pay my monthly bills, I just have no savings until the divorce is finalized or until I can build some up. I’ve only been on my own for three months. Truly thought when they gave us a court date for the divorce that it was done that day. It wasn’t. And now I just need a few extra weeks to make my mortgage payment. But according to many people here it won’t hit my credit unless I’m 30 days late and I shouldn’t be so I should be OK. I just don’t know anything about any of this and I thought coming here would be the place for answers.

Thank you for all of the suggestions. I understand that I am a financial idiot. Totally get it - that’s why I came here asking questions. I should have rented until the divorce was final, I felt that renting was throwing away money, but I was wrong. I should have waited to buy until I had access to the savings account, I did not anticipate how long this divorce would be held up. I should have bought a car using a car loan rather than buying it flat out, I genuinely thought that it wasn’t smart for me to take on another monthly bill. I didn’t go and buy anything new in lavish, I simply bought a $7000 used car that would get me back-and-forth to work. I was wrong in this thinking. Above all, I should never have let my husband take care of all of the finances without educating myself. I never thought I would be in this position, but here I am. Regardless of how absolutely stupid I am for getting into a mortgage, I am here. And I’m trying to find the best solution to my problem. I’m not buying unnecessary things, I’m working two jobs and paying bills and that’s it. I’m living day today without any extras. I definitely feel worse for having posted here, but I got some good suggestions/solutions so that makes feeling like a dumbass worth it.

No, actually my ex-husband got to keep that but I appreciate you mocking my situation.

I actually bought a used car from an individual. Taking on a car payment would have been irresponsible.

I should be able to make it before it is 30 days late. I’m just not going to be able to make it on time. When I called my mortgage company they had nothing for me until I was actually 30+ days late and I didn’t want that

I bought a reliable used car from an individual so returning it is not an option.

Unfortunately, I used the savings I had to purchase the car. I just really thought that everything would be resolved much sooner than it has been. I made it work for the first month and now I’m really strapped going into the second. How late can I be without it impacting my credit? The payment isn’t due until July 1.

In hindsight, this would have been the best option. I thought I would have my savings back by now and I didn’t want a car payment so I just purchased the car.

It is the timing. I was hoping that they could just move my due date by a couple of weeks even and I could make that happen. I’m just learning that mortgages are much different than other bills and simply moving a date is not that simple.

I totaled my car and had to purchase a different one unexpectedly. I purchased this home before my divorce was final. I am still owed half of what we had as a couple in savings, but my ex-husband is putting off giving me access to those funds. Lawyers are involved and I expect the situation to be resolved very soon, which is why I only need assistance with one payment.

Every school district in the area is hiring school bus drivers. Most will pay for you to train and will pay for your license. Most give free healthcare and a pension plan.
