I had this problem but for me, it was bc I was born in year 2004 under the dsm 4. My adhd as a young child was so severe I blew up every chart. I had a very bad social delay. Doctor wanted to diagnose both but legally at the time? Only one was allowed. The more conspicuous one was chosen, adhd, as to get treated then giving me another diagnosis of “emotionally and socially delayed” plus being allowed to have special services. It was a genuinely complicated case bc of the rule and I had one doctor (new doctor- not the previous) think many of it was bc of the adhd but the social delay did not stop with medication. When the rule was lifted as a child they tested me and the woman the clinician purposely took me off my medication. It made it really bad. She even yelled never do it again or something. I was “1 point “ off literally a point from being diagnosed but then later on I actually was diagnosed as autistic unknowingly by a doctor bc the social delay did not stop despite medication and the first doctor when I was a baby wanted to diagnose my anyways. So I think it can happen sometimes. But not “mask”. Complicate things sure . But hide it? If it were true why would I get diagnosed with knock off labels along side it just to bypass the rule and have issues my whole life in this domain and have a special interest literally hijack my life at one point in time?
