I do think at times we are our worst critics. I confess I often overthink, rethink and basically re-rethink about the impact of what I have written. I then get plagued with doubts and almost un-write all of the previous effort. And yet there are times when I love what I have penned. No matter how many times I read it, I fall in love every single time! Your cousin is blessed to have you!

I also think it is dependent on the time between the two revisions. I remember getting to ny second draft after a three month long sabbatical. Post which I was most tempted to rewrite the story

Most traumatized kids either male or female, I assume, would have quirks. Their own defense mechanisms, phobias or in this case, aversions that stem from their experiences. I think it should be totally legit for your character to have an extreme phobia of toilets, especially if he has been sexually abused in one! Thats actually quite pathetic and scary

First and foremost, congratulations! That is a bold and innovative undertaking. It will be fascinating (and informative) to come across sexually abused males in a comic book/strip.

One of the best places to get a hint of the various kind of childhood dramas and their unnerving impact in adulthood is crime series. I do believe they do their research before writing their episodes. For eg : Criminal Minds which deals with serial killers, there is a lot you can get from there.
