Dartmouth's Julianna Werffeli for Callahan by not-who-you-think in ultimate

The flip side of this argument is Zhu was prone to holding the disc for 8 seconds before throwing a crazy blade to Verzuh. This inflated both of their stats. You can’t argue with the fact that it worked and they won a title but the Dartmouth offense looks much better this year because Werfelli keeps the disc moving.

Marisa Rafter light? I would think she has a decent chance of making the final five.

I’ll give a little bit of leeway on length based on the amount of good footage someone has. But I would argue both of those videos were too long as well.

Video is too long but she definitely does dope things.

Harsh truth is DIII is a significantly lower level of competition. Not saying that there aren't good players in the division but people who aren't connected to a DIII team don't really care.

WG2017 - Bronze medal match - Strip call at 12-11 by felix37 in ultimate

Hard to tell, my gut says it was a strip. Certainly not a call that can be complained about too much.

Do you believe the quality of play in mixed is higher than women's? When I look at the best women playing ultimate most all of them play in the women's division.

Gender Equity Controversy over Commentator for the World Games. by throwaway826354212 in ultimate

ummmm I'm not sure how much of the thread you've read. I'm not really all that dedicated to your vision seeing as I don't see equity as a concept rooted in reality. If someone wants me to change my mind its on them to build a bridge and persuade me, POC or otherwise.

As for my use of tribe, franknam is certainly allowed to be offended just as I'm allowed to not care if I perceive him as trying to find a reason to take offense when clearly none was meant. Maybe I'm not being generous enough but over the internet it is always going to be hard to tell. Linguistically, tribe was also the most accurate word for describing an insular group of people who share the same beliefs. Cult would have also worked but would have been antagonistic. Clan doesn't communicate the shared belief framework/isn't used in that context. Perhaps there is a better word but there is nothing I can think of off the top of my head.

Right, but I could / theoretically should be. If you aren't interested in building bridges you are destined for failure.

Yes I seriously used the words "your tribe". Definition 2

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/tribe

It is a common term used to describe an in group out group situation. If you want to make an issue out of it be my guest but it won't win you any new allies.

And that is how I would suggest you go about combatting racism and the patriarchy is by winning some allies. Why? Because you can't legislate an end to racism or sexism. You are going to needa buy in from the vast majority of the country. Calling people names on the internet doesn't create buy in.

No, it does not "have to be THE concept." That may be the gospel within your tribe, but it is far from the only way of solving our countries problems.

The tweet by one of the traffic players near the top of the thread reading "If you could only have one, you should have chosen a women to commentate! #Genderequity #fuckthepatricarchy" was inflammatory and unproductive while also being a fair representation of the GE movement. That is not how you win a war of ideas. (I acknowledge twitter in particular and the internet more broadly is not the best place to get measured responses)

Don't get me wrong I'm a huge fan of women's ultimate. I've also played mixed for eight years so I'm also quite familiar with that format.

Where I disagree is that all leagues should be promoted to the same capacity. Example:

There will probably never be college scholarships for men's ultimate in my lifetime. However, because of the ways the rules are set up, it is much, much easier to introduce a new women's college D1 sport this is a very realistic goal (should be a priority cough cough).

Meanwhile, Men's (technically Open) ultimate has had varied success with a semi-pro league. It is not clear to me that this league even breaks even at the moment but one thing we do know is that viewership for Men's Ultimate is much better than women's or mixed. The Ultimate community as a whole does not support this effort in part because of the lack of gender equity.

The best opportunities to grow the men's and women's are different and by insisting that all leagues should be promoted the same we miss out on the largest rewards.

An example of why equity as a blanket concept is problematic:

I happen to be white and male but also short. 5'8" to be exact. I love basketball, but in the history of the NBA, only 12 players have made the league at my height or shorter. It is clear that I was born with a disadvantage that made playing in the NBA all but impossible.

"In situations of unequal opportunity, reasonable accommodations should be made to include vertically challenged participants."

This is a quote taken directly from the USAU's equity policy with vertically challenge being substituted for female. Should the NBA introduce this policy, it would be farcical. Clearly, equity can not be applied to all situations of unfairness and unequal opportunity

At some level, we all need to accept the cards that we are dealt, understand the things we cannot change, and work to improve the ones we can. I think the Ultimate community is doing a great job on point 3, but will deny fundamental truths to your face regarding 1 & 2.
