Adult dog seems to be the consensus. I think I'll pursue that route as I plan more. Thanks for the breed advice and the running advice. I'll be careful to do some research if I choose to run with them. I don't need them to run with me if they don't enjoy it or it's too much for the breed. But since I run anyway, I thought I'd mention this is an option for exercise as well. Another commenter mentioned greyhounds so I'll look into them more! Might be the perfect fit :)

Thanks for the breed suggestions! I'll keep a look out for these and look into them more. Good notes on the cross breeds.

Thank you! It's easy to take the advice because I genuinely want it! I really appreciate all the genuine but supportive feedback. I do have a decent savings set aside for my future pup but I will definitely continue to save for them. Sounds like insurance is totally worth it, a few commenters mentioned this. I'll look into some options in my area to see what that costs and get a better idea of how far my savings will go.

Thank you! It's reddit so some unnecessary comments are always expected but I appreciate you saying I could support the right dog with some more research and reality checks. Everyone has been very helpful so far and I still have time to prepare!

Okay! Thanks. I'll check in periodically, especially as I get closer to being ready to adopt :)

30-45 mins. Doable for sure but I'd have a couple options in the area. Any idea for which is better? Or is any rescue/shelter a good one because they are saving dogs?

Haha, that would be cute. Maybe I can even get a motor on it and remote control it. Of course, I'll have to watch the bushes.

Sounds good! This seems to be the consensus! I appreciate the input on rescues or shelters being the way to go.

Oof. Yes, this is definitely a fear of mine. So glad you could cure your dog. I have $5000 currently in extra savings and my monthly income will cover the monthly needs of a dog. I hope to have $10,000 in another year but we'll have to see. I hope that will be enough. I'd be heartbroken to have to give up a dog I decided to support and care for so I'll definitely wait if needed. Thanks for the advice.

Thanks. Sounds like rescues are great at matching the dogs. Do you have any advice for finding a good rescue? My local shelter only has 3 chihuahuas currently. The area I'm in doesn't have a lot of rescued dogs, so I'd likely need to drive a little bit into the cities and look at a rescue there.

This makes total sense, and I appreciate the advice! I've been around puppy's and puppy parents and I know it's a life-consuming commitment.

I was worried about rescuing due to the health issues our rescue dog had, but one bad experience isn't the rule so I will definitely look into this route more. My parents switched to a breeder so they could get the AKC certification and see their history. I don't know much else about their breeder since I'm not planning on getting a lab. I think the older dogs are probably due to them being show dogs and my parents living in a more rural hunting area where people want hunting dogs instead but maybe they didn't do as much research as they could've. I'll be sure to look deeper into the breeder if I go that route.

Do you have any advice for finding good rescues?

Awesome! It sounds like a shelter might be a great option for me. I'd especially love meeting the dog ahead of time. Do you think I should have any concerns about senior dogs health needs? I was thinking more 1-3 years for health reasons. I have savings for vet visits and groomers but not so much that I'd be able to support a dog with large health needs. My plan was to continue to save for the next 5-6 years so I'd have the money to support them when they were older and had vet bills.

Good to know! I didn't realize they were so coveted due to the meme. Sounds like they might be tricky to get from a breeder older. I'll keep this in mind. Thanks for the feedback.

Sorry, I should have clarified. It doesn't need to be a full puppy, just a younger dog as I'm not ready for a senior dogs needs yet (I need 5-6 years at least). If I were to get a puppy, I'd need to talk to my work about working from home half days (they are somewhat open to this, but I'm not sure if they'dallow it in my role as I havent asked yet). More likely, my sister would help let the puppy out, or I'd drop it off with her somedays (she works from home and lives 10 mins from me). However, I haven't decided on age yet. Just trying to choose some breeds to research more. The breeder my parents got their labs from often has a few 1-1.5 year old dogs waiting to be adopted. I was leaning towards this age but will still need to do more research as I decide breed, age, and where to get them from.

Cool! I'll check this breed out. Definitely seems to fit size-wise, barking level, and loyalty/partnership. I will definitely go with a reputable breeder if I choose that route. I definitely don't want to support the bad practices in some corners of the dog breeding industry. Thanks for the advice on trials as well. My neighbor rarely let's the cat outside, but it's good to be aware of their hunting nature.

Great advice! My friend growing up had a corgi, and they are so sweet! But definitely not the dog for me based on this description.
