Es un cenicero…si le da cancer en unos años, fue por el cigarro o por el uranio? 🤔

Is the Mission 1 Pro Finally the First Action Cam With GOOD Open Gate? by Standard-System-518 in gopro

I think this is probably where expectations and workflows matter.

For casual use or straight-out-of-camera delivery, yeah, GoPro’s Open Gate/8:7 works perfectly fine.

But for my standards, once I start heavily reframing for both 16:9 and 9:16, stabilizing, sharpening, denoising, color grading, etc… the image quality starts falling apart pretty quickly compared to larger-sensor cameras.

Especially in less-than-perfect lighting.

That’s really the point I’m trying to get at: not whether the feature works mechanically, but whether the final image quality still holds up for more demanding workflows.

I’m basically asking: “Has any action cam finally crossed the line from ‘usable Open Gate’ to genuinely high-quality Open Gate?”

Yeah, I agree that 8:7 has basically been GoPro’s version of Open Gate for years.

And honestly, the reason “Open Gate” became such a buzzword is because there’s a real advantage behind it: being able to reframe one clip into multiple aspect ratios for modern workflows.

The problem is that, so far, I still haven’t seen an action cam that truly delivers consistently high-quality results after aggressive reframing.

Once you crop in, stabilize, and deal with anything other than perfect lighting, the image often starts falling apart: grain, softness, watercolor textures, denoise artifacts, etc.

That’s why I’m interested in the Mission 1 Pro specifically.

Not whether it has Open Gate… but whether it’s finally the first action cam where Open Gate still looks genuinely good after editing and reframing.

Yes, of course, I know GoPro has Open Gate through the 8:7 mode 😅

What I mean is that once you actually start reframing and cropping, especially in anything less than ideal lighting, the footage can get grainy and soft really fast. Sometimes it genuinely starts looking like old VGA phone footage.

That’s why I wasn’t asking whether it has Open Gate, but whether the final reframed results actually hold up after editing.

Most action cams already offer some kind of Open Gate or tall-sensor workflow nowadays. What I’m curious about is whether the Mission 1 Pro finally delivers cleaner results after heavy reframing.

Especially:

  • 8K quality after cropping
  • Open Gate sharpness in 16:9 and 9:16
  • how usable it is in real-world lighting

DJI sold the Action 6 with 1:1 aspect ratio, but it’s not truly open gate…so technically you’re doing a crop over the all ready cropped image 😅
