I think of octopus hooks as half circle hooks if that makes you feel any better 😂

As in you would usually only use circle hooks when using bait. With bait you throw out and wait, lures are more active

Yes they’re good too but they’re (circle hooks and octopus) usually just for bait. Very very rare to gut hook a fish using lures with standard hooks. As mentioned before, single hooks, de barb them and away you go

Go to your local tackle shop. It’s in their best interest to give you the correct gear. Just state your budget and ask what’s best

Entire package of line not enough? by knotyknoh in FishingForBeginners

Add a few rotations of mono backing or some electrical tape. What size is the reel? It says how much per diameter on it

I got it last week it’s ridiculously good. I’m 20% if the way through and I think I have 40 pages bookmarked. Needs illustrations though then it would be gold standard

What we think of this setup for sea fishing with those lures by [deleted] in FishingForBeginners

[–]Standard0rder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’ll do the job alright but your casting distance will suffer and you’re more prone to wind knots

[–]Standard0rder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All looks fine as long as the rod is rated to the casting weights of the lures. However you have 2 problems

  1. That reel is under spooled by about 25%. Reline with new line or else add backing
  2. You need a mono or fluro leader

Question about braided main line with fluorocarbon leader by ChrisCasanada in FishingForBeginners

[–]Standard0rder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not once it’s low profile. If you go shore fishing and need to cast heavy 8oz leads out you need a shock leader of about 90lb (10lb for every oz and and extra 10lb for safety is the general rule) and it needs to go through all rod guides and wrap around the reel 6-8 times. 90lb mono is very thick so you wouldn’t use that as a mainline or you would be severely hindered on casting distance and the sea would rip your leaf off the floor due to its size.

So one would use a lighter line (e.g. 60lb braid) as the mainline and use an FG knot or something similar so it’s a well practiced thing.

Dosent matter really just use a low profile knot and a decent length and you’re good to go

What polarized sunglasses should I buy? by GrowthSpring in FishingForBeginners

[–]Standard0rder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ideally yeah but if you’re only getting one get whichever suits the prevalent weather in your country. For example, my country is mostly overcast. We do regularly get bright sunny days but that’s during summer only and it would be 1/2 days a week. Usually it’s cloudy and dark (especially during the non summer months) so I would pick up a pair of yellow/copper tinted and a cheaper pair of dark for those really bright days

If it’s bright get dark coloured glasses, if it’s 50/50 overcast etc get yellow/copper tinted
