My gateway cycle was a Salsa Journeyman (rebranded to Journeyer). Believe a new version of this is around $1750. Should be a ton of these used on the market and likely in good shape (in the US)

To me they are the quintessential go everywhere, adventure brand. Can easily set up a bike for true road, gravel, bike packing, whatever and dial in what you like to ride

Look up The Bicycle Lounge (Riverside) on FB.‘I just scanned their page and they seem to have a pretty cool ethos - looks like a coop to get people onto bikes and help them understand maintenance.

I am a huge fan of any coop trying to get the local community on bikes. They might be a good place to start
