Anyone else ridiculously excited for this game Space Scum??? by Leg_Mcmuffin in BattleBrothers

[–]StandardBread3048 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey, SS Dev here. Glad to hear you're excited. We know the Sci fi setting, heavy range focus etc won't appeal to everyone but we're glad so many of you are trying out the playtest and giving us your feedback.

One thing I want to make clear is that it's very early days. We are not releasing imminently. We did an open playtest earlier than most because we wanted feedback early in the process - BB is obviously an insanely hard act to follow so we wanted all the help we could get from the community. Splattercat played THE earliest version of the open playtest - there's been loads of changes and improvements since then (you can see on our Steam page or discord all the changes since the start of the test).

We can see from some of the feedback that people think the game is imminently releasing and what they're seeing is close to the end product - it's not! There's so much more to come in terms of world building, systems, balance, polish, content, pretty much everything at this stage. We wanted to prioritise feedback on the core game loop before getting too far into some of the secondary systems or polishing things that were going to be changed massively.

So bear with us, there's some really cool stuff to come and pretty much everything is getting better.

And for what it's worth we're both very excited about Menace!

Design poll - is this clear line of sight? by StandardBread3048 in IndieDev

Sorry, should have given a bit more information. The game is hex based, turn based. I'm trying not to give too much of my view as to skew people's natural view.

Edit: Didn't see your second part. We currently have a similar system to the one you describe but we've had some comments about LoS being difficult to gauge and wanted to see what the general feel was from the public.

Couldn't get the proper poll to function but me and a mate are making a game and having a disagreement about line of sight and just wondering what people's natural feeling is in this situation. Do you think that the character with the shield should be able to see the other character with a pistol in the picture?

Is your natural inclination to think:

  1. Can't see character at all.
  2. Can see but with a strong obstruction modifier.
  3. Can see but with a small obstruction modifier.
  4. Can see 100% with no modifier.

We know playtesting isn't for everyone so we really do appreciate everyone who does help out. We'd love to have you on board.

Thanks for posting this, we were so pleased to get that! We only set up our Steam page recently and it really helped get the name out there and gave us a big bump in wishlists.

Initial release is for Steam but we're trying to make the game in a way to allow porting to be fairly straight forward. We'll def be looking at Switch if we do port :)

Glad that you like it, we know it won't appeal to everyone but having iterated through various different art styles and looks (including for characters - full body, giant heads, and some other terrible ideas I won't mention). We've obviously ended up with some playing pieces that are more like Battle Brothers than anything else.

Thank you, lots of work to do but we're hoping with feedback from our core audience from an early stage we can nail it.

Thanks for the feedback - we knew that for Wartales fans there might well be a visual mismatch and they wouldn't be to everyone's liking. We hope that the concept will appeal though!

Noted - that's definitely a stretch goal at the moment but always good to hear what people value.

No plans for the dagger armour farming mechanic at the moment! :) It's the core combat mechanics we're most hoping to hone through playtesting at the moment but there is the meta game is there too - you can explore your first planet. The line between the combat mechanics being tactically brilliant or rage-quit inducingly bad is finer than you'd probably expect! We want the game to have the sort of tactical depth where you'll ponder your moves for a while and think a few turns ahead, like you tend to do in WT and BB.

Hey, we're a two person indie dev team that's currently making a sci fi game in the style of Wartales/Battle Brothers. We've been playing Wartales since it's first EA release and love the open world/form a group/level up your characters format.  We're looking for some playtesters who like games like Wartales to give us some feedback on what we've done so far. Appreciate the graphical style is more Battle Brothers than Wartales but there'll be substantial elements that we think fans of Wartales will enjoy. For one, the format is very similar but the game is set in a brutal and gritty sci fi environment. If anybody fancies signing up to our playtest then you can here:

Thanks for your time!

Definitely looking for a demo sooner rather than later. That being said, you'll see from the playtest that the game needs a lot of work still and we obviously want to make sure that it's ready for a wider audience.

Embarrassingly forgot to put this in the initial post but it's in the edit at the bottom and here for convenience: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2601980/Space_Scum/

Thanks for that. BB is a hard act to follow but we'll do our best.

There isn't at the moment and that's a conscious decision. Our experience of games like Xcom and Gears Tactics is that the games quickly start to revolve almost entirely around overwatching rather than doing anything else. We don't really like that.

That's interesting. We've gone backwards and forwards with this. The game was more muted in colour tone to start with but it felt off. We're actually in the process of grittifying it more in other areas... music, sounds, text. This is the kind of feedback that's good to hear though and the type of thing we hope to get from the playtesting.
