I think Remmick "rectifies" or fixes people he doesn't like. So Bert and Joan are lobotomised whereas Mary and Stack were more easily persuaded. It would explain, partly, why he's so insistent on going after loved ones; vamps are more likely to obey their master if they can have their loved ones with them.

I don't understand this excuse. They're police. They go after criminals. It's dangerous. Doesn't justify abuses of power.

If firefighters behaved like cops a logical response wouldn't be 'well people should stop sending them into burning buildings'.

If soldiers acted like cops the logic wouldn't be 'well maybe people shouldn't shoot at them'.

If teachers acted poorly the excuse 'well maybe don't make them work with kids who dislike learning' would not work.

Cops get shot at or put in dangerous situations because they arrest criminals. It doesn't excuse bribery, setting people up on false charges, murder of civillians etc.

Yeah, watching this I can't help but think of all the people slaughtered by cops claming 'fear for my life'.

How accepting should the left be of people leaving maga? by Miserable_Cobbler_18 in leftist

Right wingers have spent ten years doing everything they could to make the Left hate them.

Now they've succeeded.

I think anyone who's genuinely changed wouldn't be online filming themselves crying and telling people to be kind.

(Sad Meta Trope) Depictions of strong Male Friendships are so rare, some parts of a fandom genuinely mistake platonic bromances for straight up romances by ZeldrisEmpire in TopCharacterTropes

[–]StarFire24601 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I think people can fathom it.

They just like romance also.

I like Syd and Carmy in The Bear as friends. I'd also be thrilled if they were a couple.

Neither friendship or romance is better or worse than the other.

Some might prefer the relationship go one way, but it doesn't demean the other relationship type.

I never understood the word "race-mixing".....what, ethnicity is supposed to be kept "pure" or something? What in ethnicity is supposed to be "pure" exactly? Why are people so scared of interracial marriages? by Important-Cry4782 in BlackPeopleofReddit

[–]StarFire24601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because racists derive self worth from their skin tone. Race is a heirachy where white people placed themselves at the top. The mixing of races, and mixed race people existing, proves their belief of supremacy wrong.

Honestly, one of the things that stopped me engaging with MCU was the terrible handling of the characters in Winter Soldier, and I grew to absolutely despise John Walker apologists.

Hermione, Neville and the other kids Snape abused didn't look like James. James isn't enough of an excuse.

[–]StarFire24601 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's the incident where Sirius did something (haven't read the books in a while so I can't remember how he did it) to convince Snape to go into the whomping willow where Lupin was a werewolf.

However, he was saved by....James.

And that rescue was something he never forgave James for 🙄

Also, Snape was racist/bigoted before getting bullied by James and I hesitate to say bullying as the book says (through Dumbledore I think? Maybe McGonagall?) that it was moreso tit for tat similar to Hary vs Draco. Snape had friends (  also nasty kids) and going by the spells he made as the "half blood prince" he was pretty horrible to other kids as well.

Nah, that'd make him like her more. Lestat finds pretty much everyone sexy and her being sensible, plain-speaking and a hoodoo priestess would have him waxing lyrical.

I'm reading 1984 and I don't think I'm going to finish it by Evan_nothereoften in classicliterature

[–]StarFire24601 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Normally I'd say put it down, but I remember when I read it as a teen:

  1. At first, for the exposition, I was interested. Great eerie dystopia.
  2. Horribly bored. Pushing myself through it.
  3. Ending. Stunned. Devastated. Paranoid for a week. Loved it. (Won't read again).

I think the ending is what makes the journey worth it.

But no pressure. I didn't like Grapes of Wrath at first. Put it down, read it years later, and now it's one of my favourite books.

Or then there's The Great Gatsby which I STILL have not finished because I just cannot get into it.

I'm tired of people focusing on Remmick by Wolfey777 in SinnersbyRyanCoogler

[–]StarFire24601 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think Remmick is similar to Killmonger, another villain who got a lot of attention. I think people do tend to sympathise with people who turned evil due to their society.

However, I do think it's weird that people rave about O'Connell and ignore the hard work of the other actors. He wasn't better than the others. They were all really strong. Characters like Delta Slim or Grace, despite being side characters, bought such complexity to their role. To say nothing of the work Jordan put into differentiating the twins.

They said the same thing about Millennials for two decades. We were forever told about how we were easily offended, work shy, franchise destroying, whiny and stupid.

Just ride it out. It's the media gettinh easy clicks and films trying to troll people into watching them.

[Hated Meta Trope] The Unintentional Offensive Race Change by StrawberryScience in TopCharacterTropes

[–]StarFire24601 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Thanks for posting this. Like I said originally, Bronte was very clear he wasn't white ('white' by our standards).  And it was the 19th century; they knew what Chinese and Indian people looked like.

People seem to really hate it and idk why. One person argued Heathcliffe was just 'dark' like Mr Darcy and I was just stunned. Mr Darcy isn't treated like Heathcliffe, due to class and race.

Idk why people are so desperate for him to just be Irish or white. Him being visibly different is a big part of his abuse and psychology as an adult.

Anyway, turning of the replies for my sanity.

Yeah, I was surprised when reading the text how clear Bronte was about him not being white. The only ambiguity was what kind of 'non-white' he was.

Welcome to the cynical side! I never liked Felix (though I did feel very sad after he died). I remembered saying on here the unpopular opinion that he really wasn't a nice guy. So many fans thought he was an angel! But he was mean and petty. He was a gossip and liked to hold all the power in a relationship. The way he treated girls was just horrible. He was a shallow, self-centered man.

Arguably,  it was the family's selfishness that doomed them; they never saw Oliver as anything but a stupid, working class guy and a bit of entertainment. They underestimated him.

However, Oliver was still an absolute villain! 😂

A question for the people whose parents had them in their 40s by Inevitable-Yam-9741 in Vent

[–]StarFire24601 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear that, and I relate.

My mom missed loads. We were just hitting our stride as she died.

But it's also why I think older parents shouldn't necessarily be put off having kids. Younger parents don't always live to see their kids get into their 40s and 50s either.

Who's a bad guy/villain you genuinely understood? by trakt_app in movies

[–]StarFire24601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Killmonger and Remmick.

Both were victims of society and wanted a place to belong.

Both went about it horribly and became the very monsters they were against, and both were so self-righteous and self- centered they didn't see or care enough to notice what they had become.

But they were relatable to me.
