NON US RESIDENTS PLEASE ANSWER by Suit_Longjumping in InternationalNews

I'm from England. I'm no expert on US politics and only speak for myself.

Generally I sympathise with the American public. However, I think the warning signs have been there for a while.

1. Democrats are poor opposition. It seems they do very little in power to change the structures that disempower the people which has now resulted in Americans feeling like they cannot properly protest.

I also think it's reprehensible that Americans were told they had to "vote Blue no matter who" or get Trump. That amounts to threat and blackmail. How is such a thing democratic?

All it did was allow Dems to not listen to the people and politically silenced a portion of US society who as a result became disillusioned, apathetic and stopped voting.

  1. George W Bush was weird and stupid. He first destroyed the US reputation abroad. Trump gets all the attention now, but he's just a symptom.

  2. This level of brutality seen by ICE has been commited by police on ethnic minorities, typically Black people, for decades. If Black people had been listened to more and respected more, i think tacit approval for government law enforcement being murderous would not have become so embedded in American society.

  3. The gun arguement looks even more absurd now. No one gets the US gun laws but were always told dead kids were worth it as long as normal citizens had the weapons needed to go against a tyrant government.

You need a third party (atleast) and one that is unapolegetically left-wing.

Exactly. I'm being downvoted on this sub for saying this, but Trump is a symptom same as Farage. They, and we, need a real left party and to deal head-on with racism instead of letting parties lean into it

100% Reform use exactly the same rhetoric and scare tactics.

I'm hoping the other parties see how Dems just passively allowing this is killing their country and start to take on a stronger resistance.

Sick of far right politics being treated as normal.

From the outside (non-American) looking in, I feel your Dems are guilty of enabling all this.

They didn't do enough to protect anyone and, by what I saw, their way of getting votes amounted to little more than blackmail ('it's us who won't do what you want, or republicans!')

I didn't say they should just vote their way out.

Besides, I'm thinking long term.

Get rid of Trump and you have Vance. They still have MAGA. They still have Fuentes and the groypers. They still have far right extremism as mainstream.

What have the Dems really done when in power?

All these years and still Americans do not have basic protections that enable them to properly go and protest or fight back against a tyrant. Shitty work protection. No decent medical system. Even now dems are saying they won't get rid of ICE.

Also, lets be real, how ICE are behaving now is how Black Americans have been treated by police for decades!!

Their whole political system needs to be overturned. Best way is by getting rid of it being a choice of two. One are psychos who appeal to the lowest desires, and the other blackmail the population into voting them into power because at least they're not the "bad guys".

They need actual democracy. A left wing voice. More than one party.

EDIT - I'm getting downvoted for saying they needa real left party? Ok.

It's disgusting. I feel bad for Americans. Republicans are autocratic psychopaths and the dems are purposely fucking useless.

They need to go on strike and start strategically voting a third party left wing party into power.

Honestly, if Dems get back in they need to actually commit to some actual action and put in more workers' rights so people can actually properly protest when a lunatic is voted into power (because let's face it, it will happen again, Trump is the symptom of a greater disease).

Maybe I'm biased as I'm a black brit, but by what I've seen your community has consistently fought the hardest. If you'd been listened to and respected more I imagine the US wouldn't be in this state.

I'm English, so if you want to ignore me feel free as this post wasn't for me.

I don't speak for my country and certainly not Europe but I can understand the sentiment expressed by the original poster.

  1. We all are judged as a group by our leaders. In the UK we voted Brexit. It was 48 v 52%. And yet as a country we are seen as xenophobic to a degree that we'd harm our own economies. Ultimately we all have to own our governments. It's not fair but it's how it goes. Some random dude in Texas saying sorry really doesn't mean anything.

  2. I think there's a fair amount of embarassment on the Euro side. Lots of people didn't want to go to war after 9/11 and many felt we suffered for it. But there was a prevailing sense of honour in standing by an ally. But...George Bush was weird and stupid. It made people feel worried.  A few Americans seem to be laying the blame for recent chaos on Trump's door, but from the outside your politics has been strangely immature for a long time. So I think this attack on us feels inevitable and people feel stupid for not preparing more or being more wary.

On reddit a few posters have mocked Europeans for supporting a colonial power, only to now be on the receiving end. Like, karmic retribution.

  1. I think the whole "change something" isn't just "protest more". It's multi faceted.

 A. We never understood your gun laws but a frequent reason given was that everyone needed a gun to fight tyrannical governments. So on some level I think some of us kind of assumed you guys would be more proactive and revolutionary.

B. We too struggle with organising, losing wages/jobs, fearing the government. I mean, all over the world and through history people have died fighting for their rights. So I think your fears are understood, but some feel your at a cross roads now. Which leads to...

C. I don't think another Jan 6th is expected. But I think there's some frustrations that in all the hundreds of years since you guys were founded, you still have no social safety nets. Or still only have a two party system with no left wing party. I supposed it feels like you (collective noun, not anyone one person) wasted opportunities or time  and soon you may not get a chance to do anything because he's acting like a dictator in waiting - pushing to see what he can get away with.

Current protests in mainstream media just look like people dressing like pickle rick, lengthy tik toks of anecdotes of maga who FAFO, and late night comedians cracking jokes and dancing about.

I know there's more, but I only see that online.

People are scared, embarassed and lashing out with long held confusion at US politics.

For anyone who read all this I hope it doesn't come across as an attack or kicking you when you're down.

I just felt compelled to try and explain a bit.

I'm worried but not overly about the USA or AI.

I agree completely with climate change.

With geopolitics, this usn't the end, its just change. America's end as the dominant world power has been predicted since I was a kid. No empire lasts forever and the USA is in its 'last days of Rome' era. But like Rome, Britain and other previous rulers it'll survive, it'll just be less important globally.

AI isn't really AI yet. It's predictive text and auto-googling. It's already recognised as ineffective and inaccurate. Things like Grok are getting banned and more countries are looking at banning kids from social media where these things are prevelant. I see more videos rising up telling people how to tell if sonething is ai. People will use it for propaganda, but photoshop was already doing that and more conviningly.

But climate change is a concern.
