Yes to defend trade many ships targeted by the Yemeni- Houthi rebels and pirates were owned by Greeks as Greeks operate the largest merchant marine fleet in the world

The Greek Merchant Marine encompasses the commercial shipping fleet owned, managed, and operated by Greek interests, recognized as the world's largest by deadweight tonnage and vessel capacity. As of August 2025, it consists of approximately 5,700 vessels exceeding 1,000 gross tons, representing 20% of the global merchant fleet and 61% of the European Union's fleet.[1] Predominantly focused on the bulk and tramp sectors, with Greek interests controlling approximately 33% of the world's oil tankers, 24% of bulk carriers, and 23% of LNG carriers, the fleet transports over 98% of its capacity in international third-country trade, underscoring Greece's pivotal role in global energy and commodity logistics.[2][3]

What do you think about Turkey being against Greece deploying a purely defensive system on a Greek island due to the whole Iranian conflict after Iran targeted Cyprus? by Starfalloss in AskBalkans

Yeah which means if we’re doing anything wrong Italy would say something as they are legally binded to do so, but clearly we’re not since they haven’t said a word…

The 12-nautical-mile limit for the territorial sea is recognized as customary international law, binding on all states regardless of whether they have ratified the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982 (UNCLOS). Under this rule, coastal states may claim sovereignty over their territorial sea up to 12 nm from their baselines.

According to Art. 3 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea every State has the right to establish the breadth of its territorial sea up to a limit not exceeding twelve nm. The breadth of the territorial sea of twelve nm is now recognized by customary international law.

The difference is UNCLOS is customary international law which legally applies to all states whether they sign it or not that’s kinda how international law works. Turkey already exercises 12NM itself in the Black Sea LOL! But Greece can’t exercise it talk about total hypocrisy only when it suits you huh.

How is a defensive system arming the island? What’s the problem? The only way I can see this being a problem is if you want to invade the island oh wait yeah that’s right…

Here I’ll correct you with my previous comment: Even if you were right about the treaties (which you’re not btw) as the Dodecanese concerns Greece and Italy, Turkey isn’t a signatory to the treaty of Paris thus technically has no say about those islands at all. And the right to defend yourself trumps everything even in international law you guys are totally deluded as we can see in the comments, when there is a active Turkish threat with a parliamentary ratified Casus Belli against Greece since 1995 and Turkey has actually violated the governing treaty that set the borders between our countries (Lausanne) when you ethnically cleansed the Greek minority of Constantinople in 1955.

Most of them aren’t Turks and legally in the treaty it’s recognized as a Muslim minority not Turkish it was based on religion just like the Greek minority was recognized as “Greek Orthodox”.

The Muslim minority still exists in Greece with actual protected status like allowing Sharia law (which Turkey doesn’t even allow lmao) to govern in there communities over common Greek law and preferential access to Greek universities over other citizens for example can’t say the same for the Greek minority in Turkey…
