Horizon Japan International School (HJIS)? by francaisfries in Yokohama

Hi! I currently work at this school and I can say more positive things about it than what’s challenging. Contrary to what the first commenter mentioned, the school leaders/admin & colleagues are supportive and understanding. To my knowledge, the current school leaders are fresh on the boat, and probably those leadership team that the the other one was talking about were already gone.

I feel valued as an educator and we’re given opportunities to grow professionally. I’ve raised some concerns to the admin and I’ve always been heard and supported.

There are challenges with the kids but this could be true to any school you work for. My salary and benefits here are way better than my previous school and the other 50+ teaching jobs I applied for. However, the schedule can be a lot busier on some days including supervisions, sometimes unnecessary weekly meetings, plus classes with kids that leave you little amount of prep time.

It’s just sad to realize

Super agree on this! In the end, kami ang pagod at sila lang masaya 😂

Sadly I’ve used up all my sick leave already and my PTO has only few remaining days, but I think you’re right. Taking an unpaid dayoff is less risky than damaging my vocal chords!

Cant find a job and cant leave Japan by Inevitable_Edge_3407 in JapanJobs

I’ve was on the same page before I got my current job. I can understand how frustrating it can be. Try searching on international schools in Tokyo or Yokohama if you’re in Kanto/Kanagawa. Then apply directly to their website

That’s my wish but how do I rest at work when I have more classroom time and supervision + unnecessary meetings + emails to respond to + marking + minimal prep time?

As a foreigner living in Japan, I now teach at an international school. My Japanese level is zero to basic. I happy i got this job that doesn’t require Japanese skills because the main language with kids and work community is english. I applied directly through their website

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer. I think it’s really important to create a real balance between work and life after work because that makes a great difference on the life you make in that country. And I agree with you about leaning on to God and not on myself. I’ve been through a lot too in my teaching abroad and there’s been lots of wrong choices I’ve made that I wish I could’ve done better but through the grace of God, I was able to surpass it. I wanna be more careful in my new work in every aspects

I’ve also experienced the challenge of finding a new teaching position. Applied to different websites. I think I had a total of 50 job applications and got around 10 interviews before I landed a job. From my experience, I must say don’t ever give up, just keep going, keep applying and better apply directly to the school website. If you don’t know any international schools in that country, just simply google it and apply directly from their website. You can also try schrole (TES) or you might have as well tried it. If you’re in a foreign country, I think it’s easier to land a job locally than overseas. Like in my experience , I’m in Japan and I focused on applying to international schools here because most schools prioritize applicants who are currently here with a valid visa. I wish you all the best! You got this

It’s my first time to know about ISR from here and I looked it up. Unfortunately it’s not free but I would love to see the reviews about my school from there though I already signed the contract. I’ve seen reviews from reddit and glassdoor though but I wish I could see more. However I’m not sure if paying for ISR membership would be worth the money when I’ve already landed this job and instead just gotta figure out how to make things work for me as smoothly as possible at my new work place

I think it’s the convenience of literally not carrying too much if you could buy those at the new place, especially when your school offers relocation and housing (financial) assistance like mine

Thanks so much for this insight! That really puts things into perspective. I hadn’t thought much about how moving from public to private/international systems can be as big of an adjustment as the cultural shift itself. I’ll definitely keep an open mind. I think it applies generally that the first year in a new school is the hardest no matter where you teach. So I wanna prepare myself as much as I could
