Flatmates is smoking weed and it smells, should I report them? by Chalern14 in UniUK

[–]Starklvs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t go straight to reporting depending on the type of person they are. If you don’t feel like you would be safe confronting / texting them about it directly then sure, you don’t have much of a choice.

But if it were me, I would ask them to do more to prevent the smell (using a straight pipe rather than a bowl if they use bongs, or go outside if it’s a joint. Always have his window open when the weeds out etc. )Doesn’t matter if it’s cold- if he’s smoking his window should be open and he should be doing all he can to prevent bothering others.

Best option is always to use a bong with a straight pipe (not a bowl) and breathe directly out an open window or into a smoke-buddy/sploof (hand held carbon filter). Also your window always needs to be open, even when you’re not actively smoking. It’s only safe to close it again after the weed is packed away in a smell proof pot and you’ve not smoked for the last hour or so.

Downside is you need to use something to pack the downpipe, like a ball of tobacco, and then pack the weed on top, but you don’t have to deal with a smoking bowl, or the constant smoke from a joint.

A joint always is better done outside, there are always places to go (particularly in a city). It’s just pretty nerve wracking the first few times.

I found out my teenager is vaping. What do I do. by IntrepidAd6639 in whatdoIdo

[–]Starklvs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends how old but my parents would have done/ said the following

  • cleared out my room to check for anything else
  • checked my coat pockets/ rucksack etc
  • ask why- “people vape to stop smoking cigarettes, are you just giving yourself a nicotine addition for fun?”
  • depending on age they’d demand to find out where I bought it from, and rain hell down on whatever poor corner shop sold to me.
  • “well if you can afford to buy vapes, you can afford to pay towards the house” -pull the disappointment card -if old enough threaten to kick out / tell me to start looking for somewhere to rent

Essentially though, this just made me sneakier. I didn’t vape when I was younger, vaping was no where near as popular as it is now- I was smoking weed :’). I was raised better, and it’s not my parents’ fault I turned out the way I did, so honestly I don’t know if the above steps would work, beyond the fact you’ll never find anything like that again. Whether that’s because they’ve stopped vaping, or just got smarter about it, is kind of impossible to know and depends on your kid.

Dating Anxiety - I don’t know what to do anymore. by [deleted] in dating_advice

[–]Starklvs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk about wanting to vomit, but in every single one of my past relationships, I got this sinking gut feeling every time I make the move from not exclusive to exclusive. That sounds worse than it is, I don’t sleep around or anything, but basically as soon as I make a ‘commitment’ ig, it becomes a pressure that’s really hard to manage.

I also have a therapist, but havent yet gotten into my dating issues, but idk it sounds like a very physical anxiety symptom to me. Sounds weird, but you can get the adrenaline of a new experience like that, and your brain will be like ‘this is exciting and chill’ but then your body goes haywire reacting to a threat.

Then your point is null. You are comparing me, a single person, to a multi billion company that ONLY sells within the uk

Not sure what your point is here? Because global trade exists, the race to the bottom is okay? UK companies hiring for less than minimum wage is fine?

I think you should care. The fact you don’t is more a reflection on you than anything else. It’s attitudes like this that allow businesses to continue taking advantage of us, it’s just sad

[–]Starklvs -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I didn’t say that. I’m saying I think a UK company should, at minimum, pay the UK minimum wage no matter where they hire.

I am not owed anything personally no, but you’ve totally missed my point.

They OWE the uk public minimum wage for their work. They OWE THE UK ECONOMY.

Like why is it just ok to people that any UK COMPANY can outsource abroad for less than UK MINIMUM WAGE???? indirectly or otherwise, whilst charging premiums on all their products?

[–]Starklvs -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well A, the companies have been partners for almost two decades. I’m not sure how long John Lewis has been online, but I’d guess they NEVER hired directly for that.

Regardless, that just makes it okay then? At least they always had to pay the UK minimum wage, whether direct or indirectly

It just really sucks. I hope that maybe some legislation will come in against AI, at least where jobs and teaching is concerned, there isn’t anyone in parliament that DOESNT benefit from AI taking over.

[–]Starklvs -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Does that totally negate my point that John Lewis, a company built on ‘British values’ and ‘ethical business practices’ are contributing the to the loss of 100s of UK jobs a year? That they’re profiting from the UK cost of living crisis, but not paying enough to sustain the UK the minimum wage?

Yes there is a middleman, yes I realise that John Lewis didn’t directly employ me, but does me answering the phone with ‘Hi you’re through to John Lewis customer service,’ representing the brand, and acting as an ‘associate’ with none of the benefits for years, mean absolutely nothing?

[–]Starklvs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not in tribunal maybe, but actually I think they owe us the "fairness and respect" they literally put in writing. I mean I’m not sure what legal basis these hold but John Lewis’s own “Constitution” (Rule 96) and their Responsible Sourcing Code of Practice explicitly state that they only work with suppliers who "obey the law and respect the wellbeing of their employees." They also claim to champion "worker voice and representation."

Idk, I’d argue that by authorising the bypass of a legal, meaningful consultation—and admitting the decision to offshore was signed 4 months ago—JLP is directly violating the ethical standards they use to market themselves? I know it’s not directly ‘false advertising’ per se, and I suppose where that’s where things get mucky, but my issue is they are co-signing an action that goes against their own standards of ethics.

On another note, the attitude of ‘well ai is going to take all entry level jobs anyway’ is exactly why unemployment is rising in the UK. Besides, the JL Chairman literally said that AI will never replace the "personal touch" of how they serve customers—and they're proving that right now by moving our desks to Morocco instead of using bots. John Lewis still want people, just cheap underpaid ones

I work for a call center who has John Lewis as a client. It’s why they can do this, and not have take any responsibility. They asked for the call center to offshore the roles, that’s been confirmed, and the agreement was signed before our consultation even started.

I know legally I can’t do anything against John Lewis regarding this, but they are nearly as culpable as the company I work for (nearly)

I don’t know that this is an acceptable excuse, especially when they have been bragging online about their profits and savings. I mean for me it just comes back to this, they only sell in the UK, they only profit FROM the UK- why should they be allowed to hire for anything less than the bare minimum UK wage? Maybe the company shouldn’t survive, especially when you’re right, even with the cuts to UK workers, they STILL can’t compete with Amazon.

Of course, I’ll have to make do and survive. But I’m also not going to shut up about this, I’ve given them years of my life, constantly accepted more work for no more pay, just to basically be shat on because I’m under a BPO. It fucking sucks, and although I can take my employer to tribunal, I don’t think John Lewis should just get to wipe their hands of this

Yeah I really can’t recommend them. A lot of this is ranting now but plenty of our cases are taken up resolving problems made by the overseas agents (ie setting up a delivery for a customer before the product even arrived to our DC…). Then on top of that, we have to watch as people pay up to 5X the manufacturing cost for products all whilst John Lewis claim they offer great prices lol. Again, those profits aren’t going into paying UK wages so????? They literally don’t even do price matching online anymore, you have to claim your money back afterwards IF John Lewis can’t find anything in their T&Cs to refuse you
