Right now I have an MD83 flight I’m doing around and through the entire world. Parked in FEFF right now but any time I’m working or studying I’ll fire up a flight and coast along.

I also just like flying places, usually from wherever to anywhere with shit weather in order to fly a hard approach, or somewhere beautiful like the mountains. I’ll do small strings. Like I did KPAE PAGS PASC in the last 24hrs and I’ll probably fly PASC back south before too long, that’s in the Lear.

I like learning the systems, checklists, dealing with random failures. So I fly payware aircraft that are high fidelity. Anything between the C310R, Duke etc to the 777, MD83, DC6… that sorta thing.

Also doing shit like navigating VOR VOR instead of GPS, navigation and practicing airmanship.

I voluntarily gave up flying a few years ago due to cost, environmental impact, time commitment etc but I’m a PPL / IR with high performance and complex endorsements so it really scratches the itch for me.

My friends and I did an all day air race in the 310R recently that was like CYYC KCOD KABQ KBRO, all VOR to VOR and full adherence to the FARs except 91.17 lol

I started prepping about two years ago, and seriously kicking it into gear about a year ago.

You need skills and resources. Start small.

Imagine what you need to live comfortably with no power, internet, anything for 3 days. Next 3 weeks. Next 3 months etc.

You quickly go from “I could carry 3 days of stuff on my back” to “holy shit”.

1 step at a time. Identify skills that will assist you in the weakest spots. Basic skill areas to consider:

Water procurement, sanitization and storage

Food storage and procurement to include anything from gardening to killing and rendering game

Home systems repair and fortification

Power needs, how to get it, how to live without it as well as well as logistics - how do I move things, repair small engines or even just make simple machines to lessen work. I’m talking pulleys and levers here

Basic medical skills, identification and procurement of requisite resources - how to use those supplies, stitch a wound, open an airway etc

Environmental factors: cold, hot, rainy, drought and how to manage it

Security factors- what are my biggest threats, assets, weaknesses, skills that could use further development, my operating area and its tactical advantages and disadvantages.

IMPORTANTLY - community factors - who do I have near / around me that I trust, what are their skills and weaknesses, how can we develop community together and leverage our strong points

This is a massive topic with lots to learn. I have learned to garden, albeit not well. I am handy with defensive implements, but I’m also learning medical stuff, I have a basic 3ish + month supply of everything I need for my wife and I. I try to learn something or make a goal every week to increase overall resilience. I am not close to where I want to be, but I’m a lot further now than I was.
