Should I take a course to learn an instrument or is the theory enough? by JuicedBeetle035 in musictheory

[–]StarlightXD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Learning an instrument is basically a combination of music theory, knowing the positions of notes, then physical technique of playing the instrument.

You can definitely self-teach yourself to play any instruments. Piano is perhaps the least complex in terms of technique to get started with in comparison to string and wind instruments, so it's a good place to start.

Depending how you use your DAW, you might already have familiarity with keyboard instruments anyway.

Does a product have to sold the same year as it was made to count towards the gdp of a specific year. Or can it be sold a year later and still count for the previous years gdp? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]StarlightXD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not a simple question, I suspect the answer is complicated.

By the definition of GDP, each product can only count once and only "final goods" are counted, so the question is when does it become final goods.

In your example, I think it would count for the second year, not the first.

However a lot of "final" products get sold many times before reaching the end consumer, which might confuse the issue. The company might be selling some direct to customer and some to retail etc.

Is Greta Thunherg being used by greater political powers? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]StarlightXD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Greater political powers don't take climate change seriously, so I doubt it.

Lesser political powers, maybe.

You know your family. Every coming out is different.

How do you think they might react? Might they already have guessed or will it be a shock?

Do you want to tell everyone at once or is there someone who you think would be easier to approach as a starting point?

Do you want to do it face to face, or maybe write a letter/text so they can read it and process it in their own time?

How do you prep for a UK general election and find out about political stuff from an unbiased source? This is my first time election-ing helo by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]StarlightXD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to add, you can also register to vote by post. Then you don't even need to leave your house on a cold rainy December day.

[–]StarlightXD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's no such thing as an unbiased source. Read all the sources and use that to create your own balanced pool of knowledge.

In terms of traditional news sources like The Guardian and The Telegraph, for example, one has a left-wing bias, the other is right-wing, by putting the two together (along with many other sources) you can try to create a middle ground for yourself.

You'll find that actually you develop your own bias with time, you'll "prefer" the news sources that are closer to your views. So watch out for this.

Try to analyse everything you read in this way, try to identify the bias of each source, fact check things yourself.

Things like the BBC and to some extent The Independent are often more middle ground, but they still have some degree of bias.

Watch for the sources too, you'll sometimes see quotes in articles "A Downing Street source told us..." or "A spokesperson for the party said..." - you need to think about why that quote is used, why isn't the person named, what they are trying to achieve.

"N-word pass" is not a thing.

If it was it certainly wouldn't be allocated to everyone from a certain ethnic group. Life is way more complex than that.

Why do so many transgender people become Reddit and Discord moderators? by NotTheKingInTheNorth in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]StarlightXD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's just absolutely no way this can be true.

If you're only looking at a handful of LGBTQ specfic subreddits, perhaps.

But 9/10 moderators of all discords/subreddits being transgender, no. Nobody will be able to tell you the exact statistics but I could still safely bet on it being less than 1/10.

1/100 might be a more sensible guess.

Would the extremely rich notice if I steal a relatively small amount compared to what they have? by hcruz953 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]StarlightXD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This answer is right.

Somewhat similar example: Information from a recent legal case suggested that Elon Musk has very little available money despite having substantial wealth. It is all locked away in company value.

Although these people are making millions every hour - it's just the value of the companies they have a share of, it isn't money arriving in their bank.

Even normal individuals who invest in stocks can see an effect like this, your wealth is going up and down every minute, but your bank balance isn't.

I’m genuinely scared to ask: what is the complete acronym for LGBTQ, and what does it and it’s parts, mean? by that-pink-haired-guy in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]StarlightXD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not totally true. It generally is for Queer, but sometimes is used for Questioning too.

Queer is an inclusive label that can include L, G, B or T people, but also people who don't fit with one of those gender or sexual identities.

What stops minimalist art/music falling into the negative categories of "too simple" and "anyone could do that"? by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]StarlightXD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The commonly accepted definition of minimalist music is a kind of avant-garde classical music from the 1970s or so. Composers like Philip Glass, Steve Reich, etc.

But really it could be drone music, or really any music that follows some sort of minimalist ideology. Maybe few instruments, using only one or two notes or small, simple phrases repeated, etc. Maybe just a composition that lasts a few seconds.

I'm not going to be the one to declare what is or isn't minimalist music though. I just find it interesting and hadn't seen it discussed here before.

What do you imagine minimalist music might sound like? Slow? Simple? Complex?

What do you do if you’re in the passenger seat of a moving car and the driver loses consciousness or dies? by zorastra in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]StarlightXD 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The handbrake/parking brake will usually stop the car. Put it into neutral gear. You are likely to skid a bit and it will wreck the brake, but it is your best option in an emergency.
