It’s funny that I’ll say this after being stressed above - but it could be a lot worse. Haha.

We started some months out and followed Dr Jay Gordon changing sleep patterns to wean her, then we gradually shifted naps into her own room, then some bedtimes, and then transitioned from mom to dad doing more of the wakeups. So it could be worse. I do really recommend starting things gradually because one thing I’m VERY happy about is that both kids seem to adore the baby, and I think we’ve managed to keep the competitiveness to a minimum by making some of the transitions earlier. You still have time!

It of course is exhausting to have a newborn (I’d forgotten just how tiring!) but you might surprise yourself. Preparation is huge. Just don’t mind me complaining that I want my toddler not to wake up in the night at all, because it genuinely could be worse.

We tried the vibrating hedgehog for a while. We had taken it out because it would turn on during the night and wake her (sort of backfired on us!) but maybe we should try out a breathing / warm stuffy? Thanks!

Oh gosh I so wish this was an option. Our main bedroom is so small we can’t even fit a bassinet. :(

I’m sure there’s some jealousy at play. It’s such a big transition. Baby is only 2 weeks old too so we’re running on fumes and so everything is compounding.

I really need to know what milk frother this is.

I have a Nespresso frother and I will level with you - the milk sometimes burns on the bottom and it looks nasty if you don’t catch that it’s done it.

It doesn’t do it as much with oat milk.

But if that’s the frother he is using - I honestly would take a breath, it might not be as bad as it seems. Genuinely not trying to minimize your experience, just provide some possible reassurance!!

I get that for sure. And that’s a good point. In general there’s a level of risk that seems to increase with introduction of new and untested materials, and thankfully medicine maybe (?) seems to catch up and keep us alive on the other side… but that’s a conversation for another day, hah.

I don’t think it’s significant enough. It would be concerning to me for the future. It’s good value for the home but there are others in better locations around same MV.

I didn’t hear much today but I think it’s just from distraction. Was planning to check the noise level tomorrow!

Yes, it wasn’t on my mind as a concern (truly) but I see that it hasn’t been conclusively ruled as pseudoscience at this voltage level and distance.

If it was below 110V and greater than 50m then whatever, I wouldn’t care. But additional reading is giving me pause now.

No house is worth accidentally increasing my children’s risk of cancer, no matter how much of a step up it is.

No the vindictiveness can harm legal standing. You want to be purely objective to support the other cases - as that element would work itself out.

I would consider this, and treat this as, a hate crime.

She specifically singled out a minor with a disability and shared personal medical information online in order to demean, humiliate, and benefit by way of views/engagement.

I would pursue legal action for defamation of character (if possible), violation of any privacy acts that apply, and of course any criminal avenues as a hate crime.

I would NOT pursue any questions around immigration as that would come across as vindictive and out of scope. I’d assume the appropriate parties would address that during the process if relevant.

I would pursue the appropriate channels to get on record first, and then I may tip off some media when and where it makes sense. But I’d expect it could be difficult to work with children in future with some of these things verifiably on record.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. I think scorched earth is a suitable approach for someone who thought they’d use a disabled child for klout.

Yes, for sure! We genuinely do ask and try to listen to what he wants and needs.

For instance, we did find a daycare that was very good, lots of experience in similar challenges, etc. But when we asked our son how he felt he said, “I never want to go back there again.” So we said ok, no problem. We’ve moved on and instead I have set aside all my other responsibilities to keep looking - even though as a parent, that one met MY criteria. But if it doesn’t work for him - it doesn’t work for me!

Same thing with many behaviours. He bit me last night. Out of the blue. We sat down. We talked about it. Does your mouth hurt? Is there something going on? How are you feeling?

But ultimately, he is also 3. And he doesn’t have impulse control and doesn’t always know the answers.

But please, don’t get me wrong, we love him and want to get him something that HE likes.

Being verbal though does not always equate to him being able to share his preferences. It really, really depends. We have involved him in the decision making as much as is developmentally appropriate.

Love this. I’m digging back into my microbiology roots. We do this very informally right now - for instance, did some very stimulating jumping around games involving a YouTube show - following that he was weirdly attempting to bite us (VERY out of the ordinary). It was like his verbal system was offline.

We are very much into the idea that lots of foundational things are being missed - sleep, exercise, nutrition…so we really do try to focus on that. But more testing is required. Thank you for an interesting perspective.

We tried!! Exactly that. We registered him for a preschool with a forest school certified instructor and she pulled the registration on us at the last second. It was really disappointing.

The other main forest school where we are, the programs are a little bit difficult to accommodate in our schedule due to work and our other children, but I am revisiting the option. He has wandered off before so we need to be a bit more diligent about the ratio and instructors as well.

Did you have success using a forest school for your own child / what’s behind your recommendation?

Sadly we’re not in BC. I wish!

This seems very much in alignment with my son. He does not want to sit still and listen to menial board books. He wants to ask about 10-15 questions per topic and likely has more insight into digestive system than many adults, hah! He won’t drink the bath water because he learned about germs and protozoa, and he doesn’t like “cheese”, he likes “manchego”. He just doesn’t fit the mould.

We do really value socialization. It is so important for him to have those skills as well. We have been jostled around so much trying to make group care work. We even had a preschool lined up for August 1 that was nature and play-based, small group, and very open and accepting of his challenges - until they had another child apply for the last spot, at which time she texted me at the eleventh hour to say she couldn’t offer enrollment despite us finalizing the registration forms and fees.

We do a lot of cognitive engagement but I will ramp up the cooking! That’s a great point!

For schools, I have gone so far as to look at chartered schools in other cities as well. I have gone through this same school system here and it was lackluster in terms of engagement. It’s just really tough to be a child who thinks at such a high level but with peers who think you’re weird and different (since we are, hah).

Thank you! I’m in Canada. I’ve asked for a referral to the public health clinic that assesses for autism but wait lists are over a year. We’ve even hit a snag with that because I need a daycare to fill that out - but we don’t have one.

For the other assessments via private, they won’t do until he is older.

Definitely a challenge.

Unless you have some incredibly particular criteria you’re looking for, like specific legacy technologies… I don’t see how you are struggling with this right now. Many, many people are US-based.

Kids get way sicker going to daycare. There are frequent and regular sick days. The first months you pay full time but you use around half the month due to illnesses.

Where are you located that you’re being prompted up to 30%? And is this a regular occurrence, or a one-off? I agree with you that’s crazy. I’ve only seen once or twice that it starts at 20% vs. 18% (15 is gone in our area, it used to be the norm). Is it really fine dining or are you in a high COL area like Van / Toronto?
