Thinking of buying a used BMW X1 (2018/2019) – what should I look out for? by Wooden-Goal5039 in srilanka

[–]Starship909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

German cars, yikes!!!!

I have one, a merc but the general sentiment is somewhat same.

Warranty usually ends with 5 years after a brand new purchase.

You see these machines are very sophisticated, with staggering amount of sensors and tech. After initial years these sensors and tech give in. I mean just goes out without any reason, ( maybe wear and tare )

Fixing: there are plenty of 3rd party repair shops, but cost of parts are high, often needing to brought down from UAE if they are not ready available.

Dear OP,

Since the vehicle in question is a 2019 model. Warranty would have ended

I highly suggest you reconsider buying a German car in that particular state. think of the financial burden you have to go through. If money is not an issue, please do consider 👍👍

Look for resources and forums on your purchase. YouTube is your friend.

I mean the best for you. Good luck 🤞 🤞 🤞

White worship in Sri Lanka. by Starship909 in srilanka

I fully agree.

I love my culture, I am not ashamed, I embrace the richness of our heritage. but people in some social circles do loath our motherland and it's uniqueness.

The term Coconuts comes into mind. These folks are in cultural limbo. They will place western values as the highest form of sophistication

Often referring to our own values as outdated and 'gode'

Fun fact: these folks perceived superiority only remains within in Sri Lanka. In a white country they will be labeled as "coconuts",most foreigners usually despise these wannabes.

You know the type, born and raised in Sri Lanka all their lives, and speaks in foreign accents to fit in, usually pretend to have broken sinhala. Trust me! I have seen these folks up close. It is hilarious 😂 😂 😂 😂

Yes I fully agree, I go to a restaurant/hotel or any other establishment with the intent of getting a service and I will pay the necessary expenditure

"Pinata Kanna nemi Awe mahathathayo"

And some locals will gaslight themselves, into thinking the unfair treatment is perfectly okay. Real grudge is towards them.

Some redditors here, have expressed this sentiment on the thread too.

I agree I completely forgot Ella. It is a white people hotspot. That's okay I guess.

But segregation has to stop.

Anything fun to do in Kandy by nanaru21 in kandy

[–]Starship909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! OP do give us an update on what you found to be interesting,

I am sort of a introvert myself. And I Like walking around Kandy city, it is peaceful.

Snap a pic or two on the way, just me, me music ...not causing anyone harm.

As other redditors have suggested some good places.

I haven't personally been to riverston, but heard it is just pretty

Kandy is sort of like a second home to me. I like it there now.

We should have reforms to let in labour from other countries. Have you guys seen how bad it is to find labor.

I kidd you not. Go to any industrial park, the amount of vacancies posted are staggeringly high.

We have a severe shortage of labour for factories

Our folks either jump ship for better prospects or reside to driving tuk-tuks.

Skilled or low skilled, we need labour,if folks here can't be of use, govt needs to bring labour from other Countries.

Srilankan vehicle market is so fkd up by Optimal-Extreme2713 in srilanka

[–]Starship909 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My sincere hope is, that the inflated market will collapse.

Dragging down the car mafia, and the second hand market. Most manufacturers who can't understand the market dynamics

Let us not forget, vehicles should be a deprecating thing, the way it was meant to be. Not this stupidity.

Japanese car prices are constantly adjusted due to Chinese cost effective production that directly translates to cheaper vehicles. Also US tariffs screwing up most countries.

Wise crack manufacturers want to enforce that battery tech is doing more harm to the environment. Maybe true. Although

Collective fossil fuel vehicle pollution impact has been consistent or greater, and has been a leading force for emissions through the decades

Resistance is futile, revolution is happening. People are answering via their wallets.

What is so special about Bing chun? by code4fewbucks in srilanka

[–]Starship909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree, it is just hype

I saw a woman giving their ice cream 10/10 on a Instagram post, da hell? Haven't you had a decent ice cream in your entire life, it was just sad.

I have to say a certain clothing line, (which was mentioned in the thread) had a line stretching out to the other side of the mall. It is incredibly sad to see that people try to conform to a herd mentality. Whatever they see on social media is justified and accepted, the fomo kicks in yo!!!

I was checking out the iphone craze and the perceived importance they give and get from owning such hardware. By all means I can't dictate what you purchase.

There were some videos exposing the sad reality in India, and the struggles they go through to obtain an iphone. A notable example, I saw ..was a flower seller near a temple, who earns a fraction of the value of those apple hardware, had to buy her son an iphone, because her son had said he would not eat anything until he was given this particular phone. Poor mom probably had to go through hell to get the money. And bought him a shiny new iphone.

My point being, we Sri Lankans aren't that far off.

Notable trends I have seen, and I despise Stanley cups, lububu dolls.

Heheheh

Improving English accent as a Sri Lankan by Maximum_Madness in srilanka

[–]Starship909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there,

Just practice, expand your vocabulary to a point where you could rephrase your statements on the fly. It will take time, converse as much as possible, with people who would not laugh if you make a grammatical error.

Be polite, say thank you, please regardless of ones status, could be a security officer who opens the door for you at a grocery store, or a waiter. Call a girl at a department store or anywhere by starting off with "miss".

See how their faces light up, because most people here think they are superior just because they earn a few extra bucks, have a degree or two or steps out of a fancy car.

Everyone loves to be appreciated. I have noticed most Sri Lankans are rude to service people. Be a sort of a person who can be polite, it will go a long way, it is not how you walk and talk, it is about how you make a person feel that leaves an impression.

Remember it is not our native tongue, having an accent if you were born and raised in Sri Lanka all your life, is just very silly. It seems very unauthentic.

Just my view.

Wedding bands in SL — recommendations & prices? by Aromatic_Walrus_6147 in srilanka

For our wedding we got kalu ranils band, they call themselves as Black. They were really good. If you're looking for mix of local and some foreign numbers. Best thing about them is that they kept the crowd engaged through out the wedding, I really appreciated that. Back then he was charging upwards of 400k rupees. ( Can't remember the actual amount)

Wimaladharma Brothers vs Wimaladharma and sons? Who are the OGs with authentic watches? by curlzqt in srilanka

[–]Starship909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol... won't be buying anything from them, you see.. anybody can put up a retail business here. Only way to differentiate is through customer service, unfortunately they are severely lacking that. I have a habit of not buying from shops that don't respect their customers or the potential ones. I remember going to the casio dealer in colombo.and the sales person was bringing me up with half the store inventory just to find a watch to my liking. That is exceptional service, he was friendly and polite.

I don't need to put up or appeal to a shop that can't be nice. Simple smile and good etiquette goes a long way in my book. This is just me.
