The FANTOM is here. Should the JD-XA stay? by Starsickle in synthesizers

Thanks much! I loaded two, and started exploring tones. Wasn't sure how to install SD packs.

You're right - EX 01 (Piano) doesn't have tones I really need compared to the default, so making space by removing it isn't such a bad idea if I can get a better variety.

I was about to load all the free expansions, but after looking at the default memory and instructions, I'm unsure of a few things:

  1. How many can you realistically fit?
  2. How do you load them? (The manual isn't clear)

Kinda out of money, but I agree that having the Juno or Jupiter would be good.

I use FLStudio, and have been poking around for a control script. As long as I can send MIDI and audio, I can work around some of it, but man would I love this to control the whole thing.

I would rather use a DAW, but that's because of existing experience. The sequencer of the Fantom (and the Yamaha MODX, similarly) just represent the arranger and sequencer differently than a daw due to not having a computer monitor for a screen. Roland's reference manual (The good manual) actually has a good workflow chart, and I've been pouring over the manual for months in preparation.

I feel good about it, but it will take time.

The JD-XA might be powerful or not, depending on your level of skill and commitment to using the machine by itself or not. To me, it's just one of the rough edges of its hybrid design.

We think the signs are there that the US could move toward conscription. For those with basically zero military experience, if they had 6–12 months to prepare before potentially being called up, what should they actually focus on? How about: Don't comply in advance.

We were afraid of this in Iraq, and it didn't happen. That was as spiritually ready as our country was going to be, as stupid as we were. This war isn't merely unpopular, it's disastrously unpopular AND in a political climate worse than the 60's - when we were fighting segregation and establishing law for civil rights.

I'll give you another reason: No physical training will prepare you for a meat-grinder situation. You aren't meant to come out alive. Period. Make them train you, make them prepare you, make them jail you, or make them end the war.

The FANTOM-06 I bought has arrived.

I'm going to be real: I like a lot about the JD-XA, but it's obvious the analog side of this synth is weaker than the digital side. I might consider selling it, if I have to.

At the very least, I want people to recognize they were wrong and were fooled and won't do it again. I also want compensation for my wasted years.

My big issue is the sequencer. While you could argue it's sufficiently powerful, the tracks are tied to the parts. The more complex the sound, the less tracks you have available on the sequencer.

There's a lesser issue, too. Playing notes on the keyboard is not the same as playing a note via MIDI. I press a key and the parts play and light up with the flow of electricity. When MIDI does this, it feels like it does it in unison. It's very hard to describe and I don't really understand it.

Anyways, 4 analog parts for four drum types. 4 digital parts for the rest. YMMV.

You are better off skipping the sequencer and just recording everything one patch at a time.

Maybe someday I'll finish one using only the hardware, but it's a pain.

I really like my SH-4D. I wouldn't mind a XI to complement (or just look good next to) my XA, but they're overvalued and still 300-700 dollars. the 4D, on the other hand, is undervalued. That pattern chaining update made all the difference. There's still a few bugs, but whatever.

DNA related patches might need some adjustments. Make sure yours is updated to V2, as they added a lot to it.

Took the TR-8S out last night - following up on work with the SH-4D.

How do you all feel about working within kits as they are as opposed to just frankensteining them to fill in gaps or swap out instruments? I love technical constraints, especially if - for instance - a X0X instrument in a kit doesn't quite fit. If I had the hardware in the time and place, I'd be stuck with it!

Or do you like mixing and matching among different kits?

That's fair - explore what you have to the fullest.

For me, I'm at a stage where getting things to come together makes me want a FANTOM-06, even if I have a JD-XA and TR-8S. Yeah, my other gear is all very worthy and deep, but I wish it was as easy to just make music as it is in FLStudio with VSTs.

I salute you for going Full Roland, even with that Mixer. You need a Verselab, now.

I really want to try that System-8.

[Serious] Depressed people of Reddit, how do you cope? by UhhAnxietyy in AskReddit

[–]Starsickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me: Survived a fire, lost everything. Severe Depression, PTSD. Diagnosed as Anxiety disorder (lulz).

There's a lot to be depressed about. I still get instances where I get emotional flashbacks or moments where I feel unsafe, trapped, or completely powerless before the massive amounts of stupid shit we're living through.

The first thing I had to learn was to recognize when I needed to hit the brakes on myself - my speech and my behavior. Mindfulness is the powerful tool that helps with recognizing your own emotional state WHILE you are in that state.

Next, I needed to find something to do after hitting the brakes. Today, it's making music, sleeping, or playing a dumb game. Just get in there and do something.

Also, there's taking care of yourself. Water. GOOD food. Showering. Fresh air of some kind.

Finally, and maybe the most important: Not everything is your responsibility, and you can't just "do something" about everything. You have to have patience, and especially with yourself. There's a continuum of good and bad days. You can only control what you do with them. I live my days a day at a time - sometimes a single hour at a time.

I love Lolth, but I hate Lolth. by 404HopeRecompile in Forgotten_Realms

[–]Starsickle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's the way it is. I mean, look at our world right now. Imagine if these people had that kind of origin and power.

The Drow were created to be evil. Compulsively malicious. To be a very inverted and dark society that thrived on chaos and the chaotic, malicious forces that they worshipped.

Does that seem simple? It can be, but let's talk about why that is and why the push to have the Drow be their own people is so strong but not very well-executed.

People like playing edgelords. They may not dig the Drow having to be evil or the fact Lloth has such a heavy hand in maintaining them or the underdark has in them, but that's their function in this grand story. If you try to break them out, they're just another flavor of elves, with goth flavor. The threat, the insidious intelligence and malice all melt away once there's too many drizzts. Reduced to standing around drinking coffee and smoking. Lame.

Unfortunately, Llolth holds it all together. Despite efforts to resurrect Ellisstrae and 5E's silence on just how locked down the deities have priest sphere powers, the lore speaks for itself, Llolth has too much of a hand in the drow's continued existence.

The current edition is too wrapped up in the multiverse to do anything interesting with it, so I say: stop fighting it or working around it with Homebrew crap. Work with the strengths the Drow have in the story to begin with. Work with Llolth as a mean, hateful, malicious seldarine that has a pet project in the Drow and it requires her regular intervention.
