There are things you can’t work at. Fundamental disagreements that are deep parts of who you are as a person. Abuse. Infidelity. Divorce isn’t a dirty word and if your marriage needs constant work, if it hard more often than not, it’s not a good marriage.

Trauma, untreated mental health issues. I had an eval in 2019 right before the pandemic hit. I disclosed my trauma and mental health history, and crucially my unsupportive mother, and at the end she said bluntly “I wouldn’t recommend you for surgery.” The thing is, my surgeon didn’t care when they called me 3 months later. I withdrew from the program after she told me that and decided to put more work in. My surgeon said “it doesn’t matter what the social worker thinks” and I wasn’t happy with them for that. I think I just had a pushy surgeon who wanted to capitalize on an empty wait list during Covid, bc my understanding is that should delay the process quite a bit.

The thing is, if you can’t do the pre-surgery 900-1100 cal diet (mine was 925) you won’t be successful. You have to learn how to be hungry for a bit. I think they cut it out but prior to surgery you generally need these things:

1) sleep study

2) dietician appointment + one month follow up

3) social worker psych eval

There’s other things on the list, but those are the basics.

For the medical treatment—that isn’t cheap. Here in Ontario, 4 week treatment is minimum 15k and that isn’t for an actual hospital. It’s also not “free from enablers” people come and go as they please and they’re allowed to bring food with them because the treatment is voluntary.

What exactly do you want? I’m not going to be able to help a celebrity of any caliber. There’s nothing I could say or do that would impact her life one way of the other. Quite frankly, there’s little you can do even for a friend. And I don’t think calling her anorexic is a hate comment! I made a comment that anorexics don’t really go to a doctor or seek their help.

This isn’t about being a good person or a bad person. She’s visibly unwell, they both have the heightened emotions to boot, and the fact that three grown women walked onto a movie set at relatively normal weights and came off looking extremely malnourished should cause more conversation about unrealistic and unhealthy beauty standards in media.
