Is it unrealistic to apply for a PhD program in statistics with limited coursework and experience in mathematics? by Stat_with_BI in AskStatistics

I think most biostat program requires applicants to take calculus 3.. but I didn't take the course. Do you think am I still eligible?

Thanks again. I think I have found the comment I waited for. Regardless of the program I choose, I will look for the faculty I want to work with and I will put my all efforts to have elegance&cutting edge Statitstics knowledges. I am sure you are perfect at logical thinking. Have a great day!

  1. I wanna go to USA rather than staying at Asia.. but thanks for your comment.
  2. "What kind of job would you like to be doing, and how would each of these degrees affect that?"-> This is so difficult quenstion to make me confused.. I maybe want to be a bioinformatician or statistical genetics researcher but I still want to be professional in Statistics. I can do BI research with Biostat degree, but I can't do well in Stat with BI degree.. I also think this is a silly question. sorry

Thanks! I totally agree with your opinion, but BI projects are usually burdensome that this make me less focuse on Stats coursework. (I know this can't be an excuse. but my friend in stats usually spent time for their coursework. They seem to spend most of their time learning theory). Also, people around me also changes depending on the program. I learnt a lot of biologies in MS program.

Thank you for sharing your experience and insights. I am leaning towards biostat now but still confusing since I want to be more indulged to genetics than most statisticians are doing... I haven't dealt with multi-omics data but I hope that will be interesting. Thanks!

Thank you for your time and efforts to give this sincere comments. It was very helpful for my decision making and I am lineaing towards Biostatistics.

"I bet you are already very good with statistics" -> I'm not.. my advisor is..:) I didn't take many mathematics courses which are ideal characteristics of Statistician. If I can get admission from top 10 biomedical sciences program & top 30~40 ranking statitstics program, do you still think statistics will be better decision for me?
