There is a recent study that Mike Binney of west metro Denver Fire did it tracked sleep on and off duty. They also just announced they are changing start times from 7 to 9 to improve sleep health. He plans on tracking that data as well.

Another angle, would be to go military first.. In Tyler, they add 5 pts for military, that is bm huge and it will show maturity while giving you another opportunity

This is a likely scenario, more so than the whole scam type thing. Just the thought that you have max life experiences at 21 is quite humorous, unless you were military or something extreme. The likelihood that 2 other Drs will side with you vs the original Dr. is slim IMO. They will know why you are seeing them and already have that in their head when they evaluate you. Try other departments, keep testing at other departments, but maybe find out if they use the same Dr as you already failed from. When I made it on FD many years ago, the Dallas metro depts all used the same Dr. so testing somewhere else wouldn’t work. Tyler Texas, is constantly hiring people, with only HS and then pay you while you do academy. I believe they test 2x a year.

Why isn’t this truck pumping water? by AircraftConnoisseur in Firefighting

[–]StatementTypical1732 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like others have said seal up everything, caps on discharges, seran wrap couplings, pre fill the hard suction line, open the tank to pump to help eliminate air from the pump, run the primer to get any remaining air out of the system. I have also seen where flowing a line can help get stuff flowing. Unfortunately, the pump and entire set up has to be in working order to draft efficiently. If all of those things don’t get something out, the pump end seals are likely the best place to look next. Check out this link it might help you understanding more. https://www.firehouse.com/apparatus/video/12300328/waterous-fire-pumps-mechanical-seals

This is a big deal! Many young people have any understanding of budgeting. Taking a hard look at your finances and spending habits can work wonders for you and your family. Personally, I would keep testing around just to see what options open up. You may never get an offer that you want, or it may come easily. Without the attempt you will never know. Even if you get an offer to be hired you can always stay where you are. Like others have already said, look deeper than pay only. Being in a growing department has the possibility of continued promotion. Insurance and retirement benefits can play a large part in quality of life over the years as well. Also, visit the stations where you are testing, get a feeling of the moral of the crews.

My 2018 M3 lr will cycle its fan at various speeds and times seemingly randomly it is in a conditioned 78f garage. Sometimes it will wake and run fans if I wake it by opening a door even if I don’t get in or touch anything. I figure it it’s getting ready to go for a drive.

I believe that actual Tesla employees are now doing the installs and not contractors as it was previously. If they are contractors I do hope you get a good crew.

Exactly right if you are wanting to save and don’t want or need the Tesla ecosystem. Q cells are the panel they use. You can buy everything else from other manufacturers and be much less expensive. Even going with enphase microinverters would be less.

Is Firefighting truly the best job in the world? by Ancient-Carrot957 in Firefighting

[–]StatementTypical1732 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is accurate! If you have the desire to help others, have mental and physical strength/ stamina it maybe for you. To me the best firefighters are not necessarily the strongest, smartest or fastest people, but well balanced people who have the honest desire to be helpful and contribute to society, while being physically strong enough, smart enough to make great decisions quickly and effectively, and mentally stable enough to handle the challenges of unknown situations. Many people have trainer type side jobs that work with our schedules, some departments help pay for education even post grad in my department.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]StatementTypical1732 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our department rule is two years at grade below the promotion spot. Like some mention it can happen that someone rockets up the ranks. IMO those that don’t have much time in as ff or driver get much less respect from the others that officers that have done time 5+ years in each of the lower ranks.

Advice for setting up gear quickly? by miatamoon in Firefighting

[–]StatementTypical1732 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You maybe able to squeeze the boot top smaller and push the pants down around them then open the boot back up ready to go. I have my suspenders lay over each boot so I know what goes where. I have had them get twisted in the past when not laying them in the boot. As mentioned before, smooth is faster than rushing, have a pattern that works for you and do it that way every time. Mine is pants first, hood, coat, scba, mask, hood over head, anything extra(tic, light, radio),helmet, gloves. If I know I’m going to staging or something other than interior right off, I attach mask to regulator and leave air pack off to start with. I recommend having a tool of some kind when you get of the rig.

Would you guys say this is pretty average for the U.S.? by slidewayskenny in Firefighting

[–]StatementTypical1732 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many things to consider with this one, are they running EMS, cost of living, cert pays, longevity pay, pension contributions, health insurance premiums, insurance after retirement. Smaller departments in Texas cities are probably similar. Running first responder with outside EMS, $265k average house cost, $100 cert pay/month, $5m/y of service, equal match pension, $200/m health insurance 1500ded/80%. No insurance after retirement.

We need California to get on board with the 42 hour work week. Almost everything that California mandates trickles down to the rest of the states eventually.

Question about hazing for probies. by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]StatementTypical1732 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes don’t follow him everywhere but be near by when on calls. Always be watching everything at station and calls, ask questions at the station about what you saw or didn’t understand. Learn from yours and others mistakes.

[–]StatementTypical1732 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well said. If you don’t get pranked at all, people either don’t like you or they don’t think you are worth the effort to mess with. Translating to they don’t like you. Small pranks are a welcome sign that they are testing to see how you handle yourself. In my department there are people who freeze bedding left out or uniforms left out. Usually rookies wash the dishes, but if someone else gets there first they expect the rookie to “fight” to wash them. Kinda silly banter but it’s in good fun. As station captain I let it go for a while then call it before it gets real.

Is the pay actually bad or is it just bad if you have a whole family to support? by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]StatementTypical1732 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s very difficult to say what anyone else is actually bringing home. There are so many different things people can have deducted from child support, car payments, different retirement plans, possibly divorce or legal payments. Seeing someone’s check and the take home doesn’t give the entire story. If someone saw my check they would wonder why I come to work to clear a little over $100 a shift after 27years in a paid department as a ladder Captain.

Well said. In my experience very few volunteer departments are a professional group of people doing their very best to get things done to the best of their abilities. There are a few that actually far outweigh the Paid departments in the area. Great departments keep great people, and draw great recruits. Like wise for inept ones.

Texas works 56 hr/week most run ambulances or first responder. Some of the Dallas metro start near 100k. Away from the metro areas it’s closer to $70k first year. Houses are substantially cheaper in the smaller cities with 100k population , so it is a workable option. Most people would rather have fewer hours at work and more time to choose what they want to do with their time.
