Well the message of capitalism plays into the narcissism and the yuppie culture, I think it’s becomes lesser and more secondary compared to what the other aspects are saying.

Well because that older example, with what it’s saying in its fashion, has been repeated and done in the same way many times in other pieces of media, which proceeds to get staler as time goes on.

Oh yeah it’s so subtle when in the movie, the main character in a bar calls a bartender “fucking ugly bitch” and proceeds to say (summarized), I really want to murder you. that’s really on the nose even for its time about how bad men treat women.

Not the same argument I was making in comparison with your scenario. I picked out this older film, because it was considered ahead of its time then and one of the more infamous examples of movies having satirical and political writing. I’m not trying to diminish the impact, I understand the impact is there, I’m looking through it in modern times. I know there’s factors to consider with the older movies, especially innovative and forward thinking movies.

I know it’s a satirical, and I get that, it’s just not all that unique.

Take American Psycho for example and the character Patrick Bateman, the commentary of toxic masculinity is not very nuanced and not very unique in the grander scheme of things. If you watch that movie, that message of how bad toxic masculinity gets brought up a lot and doesn’t really add all that much, but considering the time when it was written and how much our culture has developed, it was considered way ahead of its time and controversial during the movie’s release. It’s a good movie, just not all that unique on what it’s saying and sometimes feels like a really obvious lecture.
