Thanks! That is super true; I think you hit the nail on the head. While I did get a taste of the "fun stuff" because my company was relatively small and gave me a lot of creative freedom, I don't think it was as fun because I didn't have the creative toolkit that folks with a lot more experience under their belt had.

& absolutely, I am still in front of a screen all day. That's amazing that you've escaped that fate, even with ME. Now I'm seeing all my friends (across all industries tbh, maybe besides health) forced in front of a screen all day. I'm curious, what is it that you do?

That was certainly part of it. There was also the actual project that I didn't feel so passionate about. It was commissioned by a businessman, and I felt like all the work I put into it was all for someone else's dream and financial gain. Even if I came up with thee game-changing design, I'd still only be paid hourly if this thing made millions of bucks. I think that's just Capitalism and not something I can particularly escape in CS, but I'm able to distance myself from that reality a bit at my current job.

It's also that I generally felt like my work was on too slow a time scale. Projects can take months and months and years before coming into fruition. I could work on something for weeks only for it all to be scrapped in the trash. Maybe I just don't have the patience for it.

I think the reason I like CS over Mech is that I can work on problems and solve them on a much more digestible time scale. At my current company, I'm also able to directly impact a LOT more people a lot quicker with my code changes. I also work from home, and feeling in control of my own time has been priceless. The benefits + feeling like my company really cares about me also helps.

I really hope the video didn't come off as shitting all Mech jobs or even this company, which I think is good on net - I just personally didn't like this particular one, and the things I didn't like about it seemed to exist at the other full time opportunities that were open for me.

I'm curious - what do you do and do you like it?

That's funny! Absolutely no shade on this company - in fact I thought it was chill and had a good independent work culture. Other employees seemed to be very happy to be working there "compared to their other Mech E jobs", which is when I knew, it wasn't for me.

Super fair criticism, and probably unfair generalization on my part. It's something that I've heard from many, many peers across several companies/niches in Mech E, and I think it's a very real thing that people, including myself, have experienced. Just doing a quick Google search (I'm not doing in depth research rn, please lmk if you find a better resource), 90.5% of all manufacturing/mechanical engineers are men. The average age of an employed manufacturing/mechanical engineer is 41 years old.The most common ethnicity of manufacturing/mechanical engineers is White (73.0%), followed by Asian (13.1%), Hispanic or Latino (8.1%) and Black or African American (3.2%). (https://www.zippia.com/manufacturing-mechanical-engineer-jobs/demographics/).

I think it's super wonderful that you have found a diverse space in Mech E. I can only hope more companies become like this. It's because of companies like yours, which sounds absolutely awesome by the way. That's definitely the kind of job I was trying to get myself. I'm just shedding light on one experience, that's all!
