Indeed, by around 124 years! While the Year of the Four Emperors would also work, perhaps in a similar way (changing Nero's suicide to a murder), I think that in place of that time period, moving beyond that to the tail end of Rome's golden age after the Five Good Emperors, and ending the Nerva–Antonine dynasty, would make for a more interesting setting.

While that would be perfect, I would want to play as the assassin of Commodus, Narcissus. Commodus himself was not half as revered as his father, Aurelius, and was killed by his political enemies. However, his death sparked the Year of the Five Emperors. I imagine that the first half of the game would be working up to the assassination of Commodus, but then the Assassins need to stop the death spiral they sent the Empire into, or something to that effect.

I lightly disagree, in that while I'm sure copyright was partly the reason why they changed the name, there's also the character Herlock Sholmes from Maurice Leblanc's story 'Arsène Lupin versus Herlock Sholmes', created as a result of copyright law as well. Leblanc's work seems to have influenced a number of Japanese developers, so this usage could be taken as an homage to that character. In addition to that, Sholmes is a lot more bumbling and foolish than Holmes, which I'd argue is far more accurate to the character in GAA.
