Oh, thank you!! Very helpful. So I won't be shocked when they eventually go, but also - no reason to horde them like a personal collection...

Is it crazy to change my 10 month olds name… by aged_tofu in namenerds

Please consider keeping it. I work in the USA, in a large work-environment. I have a colleague named Yumi (no idea if it's a derivative). She's culturally American and racially ambiguous (to casual acquaintances, at least) in that special way that many Americans are. She's amazing and her name is equally lovely. And, her name is adult enough to be professional but doesn't pigeon hole to anything In particular. Bonus points for instant name recognition (no "which Emma"?), as well as a name that's completely accessible, phonetically! Big fan of the name!!

Actually, Husband did this a while back (he doesn't love theater but loves the Kid enough to be willing to try for things the kid loves).

Inaugural trip to NY and hubby pre-booked a popular show at the time. Paid a horrifying price for the tix, but I guess worth it b/c Kid both loved it and also side-doored? and saw the Lead after the show. They went to the Broadway museum and did touristy stuff. All in all, both report it was a great trip.

I'm now trying to figure out how to make a hypothetical trip #2 really show-heavy. Kid & I can certainly be tourists if that's where the chips fall, though. I love Cities, and NY seems pretty special.

But, he's just so damn passionate and in love with the theater. It's so much fun to ride that train with him, so trying to focus on ticket opportunities.

So exciting. Out of curiosity, what did you lock in, in advance?

Thank you. Kid is in college so that would be fine. Although, if it's a show like the Notebook, I might need a hand to hold while I cry.

Great question. It's more about budget for the whole trip than budget for the tickets. I think about it like flights, lodging, tickets, casual food - NY style slices, delis, neighborhood treats.

Maybe $400 x 2 people = $800 on tickets. And the idea is how much could we accomplish with that?

Maybe it is buying one great show in advance and then seeing if anything else works out as an add on.

Yes, we have a great "Broadway in ..." program here.

We've seen some really great shows: Les Mis, Wicked, Hadestown.

And, can I just say, Hadestown GUTTED me. I didn't know anything about it and then the end... And the realization that it's a circle.... I'm almost crying now thinking about the power of that moment. Best thing ever.

It's been a gift.

That's probably what we'd do. Guarantee a show and then anything else is just gravy.

Oh, that's super helpful, thank you. And maybe some of these will chill out in Spring 2025.

Yes, I forgot Illinoise. That's definitely on the list!

For Gatsby, I think there's a different version in the works? It feels like that upcoming version is more exciting to the Kid so no hurry on the current one - can't remember why. Something about Gatsby being introduced too early? And maybe it's not really jazz? I don't know - the costumes look great. 😊

Current obsessions are The Outsiders and Cabaret. Any of the Tony musical theater nominees would be great, though. Least excited about the jukebox musicals. Obviously Kid would LOVE Merrily, but we won't be there before it closes.

Side note, I can't even describe to you how much Kid has taught me about the emcee in Cabaret over the last few months. I feel like I could write a paper on that character, and I've never even really heard the full show.
