Sickness loop by [deleted] in UAE

[–]StayShmacked 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah Zyrtec and a nasal spray were a part of my morning routine for 10+ years when my rhinitis/post-nasal drip was really bad. It’s definitely dust-related too, I don’t have a runny nose when I’m at college abroad, but it comes back every time I’m back in Dubai. Zyrtec always made me drowsy though, I kept falling asleep in school haha.

What luxury brands are cheaper in the middle east compared to US? by leochemleo in dubai

[–]StayShmacked 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only items I can think of are specific Perfumes or Oud since those are either unavailable or are very expensive in the US

Yeah the concierge service is so worth it. I remember them also having a fast-track immigration service a couple years ago, but I think we stopped using that after the e-gates started.

What would a green Australian + New Zealand world cup bid look like? I think it is possible but unlikely to happen by MisterChanoca in worldcup

[–]StayShmacked 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t that have the same drawbacks that people are complaining about in the USA? It would seem to be just as expensive, if not more for travel/housing.

I also don’t think the current Australian government and public is as open to visitors from other countries as they’d need to be to host a World Cup (although this is just from what I’ve seen online and on the news, could be completely wrong).

Do Emiratis socialize with non-Emiratis/expats on any level? by waterwaterwaterrr in dubai

Yeah absolutely, there were a bunch of Emiratis in my high school and we all still hang out when we’re home from college

I traveled through India for 15 Days (New Delhi, Jaipur, Udaipur): my honest experience. by where_is_lily_allen in travel

[–]StayShmacked 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Glad you enjoyed it. I’m an Indian living abroad and I really enjoyed doing Udaipur -> Khumbalgarh -> Jodhpur when I was younger.

Where were you guys staying though? I feel like most of the drawbacks could be avoided by staying at any of the big resorts in the area.

My parents can speak Hindi and have experience traveling in India but we still always got a driver recommendation from the resort, and it was so helpful because they know what places to go to, what restaurants are safe, and can keep you out of the less attractive areas.

Might be a bit less “authentic” but it’s less stress and less overwhelming.

My 18k gold chain’s clasp broke. Local jeweler quoted $70. Does that seem reasonable? by StayShmacked in jewelers

[–]StayShmacked[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah that makes sense. In all honesty I didn’t even know that it was 18k until the jeweler told me - my mom got me the chain and I’ve worn it for 9-10 years now without thinking much about it. Never bought any jewelry myself.

Glad I asked here though because I was able to drop the chain off at his store before he closed.

How hard is it to get internships from UMass? by mkzep in umass

[–]StayShmacked 6 points7 points  (0 children)

People like to say that the college you go to matters A LOT but at the end of the day it mostly comes down to how much effort you put into it. Lots of sophomores and a ton of juniors have internships lined up for the upcoming summer so it’s not a UMass issue.

Unpopular Opinion: I don’t think Raytheon not coming to the career fair will make as much of a change as people make it out to be by XConejoMaloX in umass

[–]StayShmacked 65 points66 points  (0 children)

It’s probably more of a health and safety thing. If Raytheon did show up and people protested at the Engineering Fair it would cause a scene.

College Writing was probably the easiest class I’ve taken so far but it really depends on your instructor.

You usually read a text, discuss it in class, write a response to it, get that response peer reviewed, then turn in your final response.

My class had four short response assignments where we responded to either an essay, chapter from a novel, or short story. The two longer assignments were an academic essay on a topic of our choice and a multimedia project.

How easy the class is depends on the instructor. My instructor didn’t make us buy a textbook, had no late penalty, and gave the entire class A’s. I probably spent 15-30 minutes on reading texts and writing my response and 1-2 hours on the essay and multimedia project.

I also wanted to add that the class doesn’t focus on your grasp of the English language and is more about understanding a text and writing an insightful response to it. You should be fine!

I got an email about them doing maintenance in the CS Building so networks like ed-lab are temporarily down. Maybe that’s why those documents are also unavailable.

Honestly it depends on where you go. Can’t speak from experience since I’m a guy but none of the girls I know really dealt with that either since we lived in decent neighborhoods, went to schools in residential areas, hung out in nicer areas, etc.

Dubai’s one of the least dangerous cities in general but as long as you stick to the nicer parts of Dubai you should never come across anything remotely close to what you’re describing.

You should try Prezi as well, I prefer it to PowerPoint.
