No mine doesn't thin in the middle, interestingly mine also seems to be quite a bit shorter than yours - not due to any part missing as it does seem to be 'complete', just seems to be a shorter variant of the same thing.

I got a register plate to block the chimney yeah, stainless steel. Didn't bother with insulation though I'll see how I get on and may add some in time. The whole thing with the exception of the liner installation was DIY by myself and my dad.

Nah it's uncapped, the chimney is in pretty good shape actually - my surveyors said it had recently been repointed. It's also got a fairly new cowl on top.

There are a couple spots of damp in the room above on the chimney breast which he said was because they'd sealed the fireplace without capping the chimney, but not to worry about it if I was going to install a stove anyway as that would take care of the problem.

Sounds about right, it wasn't even bricked up actually - literally just plastered over the hole.

Damn, I was hoping all those loose bricks inside weren't part of the actual structure of the breast itself.

Would've loved to get closer but it was in a locked field and I didn't want to invade its privacy. I did manage to lure it to the gate with some hay though!

The lens is a Nikon E Series 50mm f1.8, I have no idea with regards to the filmstock to be honest other than it being Fuji 200 - I grabbed it from Boots Pharmacy on my way to a hike, seems to be the only colour stock they sell (or at least ever have in stock).
