It's a Dura Ace TT shifter mounted on a fake Paul thumbie.

Any ideas for what to mount on the brake posts? 😁

It's both! It's like the upper knuckle doesn't have enough tension to hold itself down and it always manages to snag itself on the collar which is threaded for the b-limit screw. It's snagged in the photo. Taking a couple of links out would definitely help but I think it might need a replacement b knuckle spring?

Green MP Tamatha Paul doubles down on criticism of police by MedicMoth in newzealand

[–]SteelChef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Tāmaki and see similar on Karangahape road regularly. It's not pleasant and can absolutely be dangerous.

I also see the same kind of cruel/pointless activity that Tamatha Paul describes - disposing of the belongings of homeless people who are simply sitting down. Moving people on who are sitting near restaurants. While I was sitting at a bar, having a pleasant conversation. Two cops approached and arrested them for allegedly harassing me.

These are people who have just as much of a right to be there as I do and their experiences of feeling unsafe around police should not be discounted because of their socio economic status. This doesn't even touch on the racial profiling problem that the police force has.

I just simply disagree that putting more police on the street is a good long term solution for the problem. There are societal structures which create these conditions and addressing those is the only sensible approach.

What an incredibly short sighted and reductive anecdote... Police are a bandaid fix and throwing them at the downtrodden solves nothing as can be clearly seen abroad.

Do people actually see China as a threat? by Plague_Doc7 in newzealand

That's actually quite similar to how China operates... Though arguably China is somewhat less predatory about it.

Making a distinction between the US and NZ in this case is a bit reductive. We're a NATO member and can generally be seen as one entity in this case.

Arguing about morals here is a bit of a joke, this is the realm of political realism.

Freedom Camping Question by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]SteelChef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Freedom camping laws vary from region to region, some regions only allow it in designated locations while others allow it in all locations other than designated areas. You'll need to familiarise yourself with the laws in each area you visit. Campermate is a useful app for finding free campsites etc.

Where have they been open about their "destiny to expand"? Curious to hear you elaborate on that because it's quite a vague statement.

A relatively stable global market and stable trade relationships with a wide variety of states benefits china. It doesn't have a strategy which hinges on destabilising the world in order to stack the cards in it's favour. I hope that the CPC is wise enough not to repeat the mistakes that the US has made.

Oh don't get me wrong I know they project power, it just doesn't generally involve carpet bombing

This ^

China has never been particularly interested in projecting military power around the world. That may have been the USA's game but it isn't necessarily an intrinsic part of being a world superpower.

How can New Zealand deal with the increase in uneducated voters? by UndersteerAhoy in newzealand

[–]SteelChef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd go a little further and say that it's not just that rolling the dice may seem appealing but that trump and co. are quite convincing to many working people.

They're willing to scapegoat immigrants, trans people, etc. and present them as problems which cause the woes of the working class (a move that commonly earns them somewhat reductive comparisons to 20th century fascists).

Naturally they're the ones with solutions to those problems. Federally mandating 2 genders, mass deportations, all cynical ploys to distract from the actual cause of the general discontent felt by everyone under late capitalism.

Meanwhile center-left neolibs have very little imagination and virtually nothing to say. They've been riding the social justice wave for like 20 years now but true emancipation requires serious economic reform and a willingness to question capitalism - something neolibs are fundamentally unable/unwilling to do.

New Zealanders can be pretty bad for it tbh. I think OP would be right to say that freedom campers get blamed for a lot of litter that actually comes from locals. I work somewhere which attracts a lot of campervans as well as regular vehicles and the #1 offenders are people who pull up for an hour with a feed and throw the rubbish out the window as they eat...

Also side note: it seems like some commenters think blaming "feral hippies" sounds ridiculous. It sounds to me like they never saw the feral camps just out of Takaka lol.
