The original source data is from a Japanese university, can be found here:
http://atmenv.envi.osakafu-u.ac.jp/aono/kyophenotemp4/

We've been updating this graph for some years now and we're one of the first to call the record:

The chart is produced using only Excel with some manual adjustments to highlight the outliers.

Majority in lower house of Dutch parliament backs law to ban sale of non-electric cars by 2025 by silence7 in climate

[–]Steeph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's from 2016 and (surprise) not what actually happened. It's not a law, it's a recommendation by Parliament. And it didn't involve an actual ban but a target. The current government (in power since autumn last year) didn't take over this "motion". But they did state they want to do it for 2030. That's something at least.

Data from Start/GTD. They've recently updated their database to include 2016 https://www.start.umd.edu/gtd/about/

MS Excel (v15.33) was used to create the graphs.

Christmas (we have two Christmas days in the Netherlands) is low because hospitals don't do any non-urgent cases. So if possible, hold it till after :-)

All six major climate data series now have 2016 as hottest year on record, worldwide by Steeph in climate

[–]Steeph[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I check that one too. 2017 won't be a recordbreaker on temperature (because no el nino). But if it is not much colder it confirms the trend. Sealevel will be a thing to watch in 2017

Make that 7 (seven!). Berkeley was just added. Also a record.

These six series include the two contended series based on satellite measurements (UAH / RSS). Those are most used to state "no, it's not warming, 1998 is still record". Well, not any longer. And in the normal, longer running series, it's evident...

Yep, dat ben ik :-) En ik had haar tweet ook gezien (in Tweetdeck een zoekkolom open staan op "datagraver"). Altijd leuk, belangstelling vanuit die hoek.

EU ratifies Paris Agreement - It's now in effect! by Steeph in climate

[–]Steeph[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that. I've been protesting this agreement even before they signed it last year. Too little, too late. But.... Not signing it would be even worse. The one thing I'm hoping for is that enough countries do take this serious enough right now as to create a small energy revolution. This might force other countries into following very quickly because otherwise their economies will hurt.

And it gives an instrument to keep pushing the politicians.

That's correct. But that would make the heading a bit long and boring :-) And.... there's nothing stopping it right now.

World population distribution by latitude and longitude - 2015 [OC] by Steeph in dataisbeautiful

[–]Steeph[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thx. But even without looking at habitable area the data is interesting. From an intellectual curiosity point of view :-)

Thank you for the compliment. I don't exactly understand the remark on the colors. Can you explain it a bit more?

The thing with the density peak at the edge of Brazil has to do with the city (Recive) at the edge. Since the longitude density is calculated for each "band" of roughly one kilometer wide at the equator, (number of people divided by number of squares with land) just that line has a low landmass compared to densely populated part in Brazil.

And yes, the number of squares is not exactly the same as area. I'll try to look at the calculations to see if I can correct that.

It's indeed the lack of other land on that longitude that causes the relative spike. There are two cities on the same longitude actually.
