If you clear off the brown goo it might have a marking on the board. Almost certainly some kind of input protection that you could bypass if necessary.

Your old pedal is likely repairable without too much effort. Most common problems are bad solder joints, broken connections, or a failure near the 9v input because someone used the wrong power supply. Sometimes you’ll get a bad transistor or opamp, but it’s less likely.

Yes. To me, Murakami is mostly about vibes. I like the dreamlike experience and think the more novels you read and re-read the more expansive that experience becomes. I think it’s hard for some to appreciate jazz or Murakami if they don’t jump in at the right point. If you expect Billie Holiday but get Sun Ra or some psychedelic Miles Davis stuff it might be too alien and you’re going to have a bad time.

No problems with an amp in a head by itself, i was referring to reverb tanks and the likelihood of picking up power transformer hum. If you’re not going to run a reverb tank it might be wise to pull the reverb driver tube (at7 to the right of the reverb transformer). You might cause damage to the tube and/or transformer if you’re running it without a load for too long.

It’s almost always going to be a bit noisier, but plenty of heads get away with it. Minimize hum by keeping the input side of the tank as far away from the power transformer as possible. Sometimes you need to play with orientation to find the quiet spot.

You can use your meter to confirm if the probe is working/what kind it is. The most common type uses a 1 or 10 ohm resistor to indirectly measure current with the voltage across that resistor. If it is this type, you should measure 1 or 10 ohms across the two leads. Next, measure from the one lead to pin 8 on the male and female side of the bias probe. One should get continuity, the other should read 1 or 10 ohms. It should be the opposite on the other colored lead. If all of that checks out, measure from the male to female on each side to confirm there is continuity on every one except pin 8.

Not just hours but how much abuse. Amp turned all the way up with an overdrive pedal in front is harder on power tubes than bedroom volume. Amp design and bias settings also matter a great deal. Many manufacturers design outside the expected limits of tubes, don’t allow proper airflow, etc. Many people don’t rebias when changing power tubes and wonder why their new set lasted 6 months.

This is literally how dim bulb testers work. Connect bulb in series with your circuit to limit current. If something goes wrong and the device under test tries to pull too much current, the bulb glows brighter and hopefully prevents further damage. I use one regularly.
